“Courage Is Almost A Contradiction In Terms.
It Means A Strong Desire To Live Taking The Form Of Readiness To Die."
Veterans Day is officially the eleventh day of the eleventh month first proclaimed by Pres. Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and later expanded to be a day of remembrance for our living veterans and service personnel currently serving. Part of Wilson’s official proclamation: -
To all who have served, who currently serve, and will serve in the future, thank you for your courage and your willingness to serve. We wish to express our heartfelt thank you.

Veterans Day is officially the eleventh day of the eleventh month first proclaimed by Pres. Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and later expanded to be a day of remembrance for our living veterans and service personnel currently serving. Part of Wilson’s official proclamation: -
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."So that the official Uniform Monday Holiday Act federal employee holiday from work (with the exception of those in uniform, of course) does not get lost to the "Veterans Day Sale" at the local malls, let us remember why this holiday was proclaimed in the first place. Please join me in the following:
To all who have served, who currently serve, and will serve in the future, thank you for your courage and your willingness to serve. We wish to express our heartfelt thank you.
Amen and thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bev!
ReplyDeleteIt was an honor to serve, and I would do it again if I could. :^)
Happy Veterans Day everyone! And thanks to everyone who has served! :)
ReplyDeleteMy grandpa's birthday is actually the day before Veterans' Day, and he served in the Korean War, so he really gets a joint celebration. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks to Papa, USS Ben, and everyone else who's fought for our country.
HaPPY Veterans Day
ReplyDeleteA veterans day salute to my 4G grandfather (k.i.a. 2nd Freeman's Farm, American Revolution,) my great granddad (wounded near Peebles Farm during siege of Petersburg, Civil War,) and my dad (W.W.II in North Africa.)
ReplyDeleteHappy Veteran's Day!
ReplyDeleteSo, maybe this isn't the post where this should be discussed - Veterans Day and all - but there is rumor that John Kerry is being considered for Sect of Defense. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he kind of famous for hating the military and protesting the Vietnam War while still in uniform or something? [Even if that is not true, let's start that rumor anyway - cue Swift Boat people!]
ReplyDeleteBev, That makes him the perfect choice... don't you see? He'll be an outsider who can really help them with hard truths.
ReplyDelete//rolls eyes
Does this also mean that Panetta (former CIA director, now Sect of Defense) is moving to yet another position? Maybe he can be appointed Sec't of Sec't's.
ReplyDeleteI thought there was a three strike rule?
ReplyDeleteAndrew - That's federal crimes, not federal appointments! Gaaah...oh, wait, how does one distinguish between two?
ReplyDeleteBev, I get confused on that point. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks to all Commentaramans who served!
ReplyDeleteSince we're marginally off-topic anyway, let me share an experience I am having with how the other side lives. As I've mentioned, I've given up on Right Wing Radio and have taken up listening to NPR in its place. Six aneurisms and a faulty suicide attempt later (and it's only been a week) I'm starting to take it in stride.
So, with my faculties restored, I was able to appreciate how NPR's Veterans' Day "tribute" expertly characterized our military veterans as another victim class. Seriously, every segment today dealing with Veterans' Day could have made Oliver Stone blush with the way veterans were, time and again, portrayed as helpless pawn thrown by the whims of the ruling class. Nevermind that the victorious Allies had won the fight against imperialism. But wait, the NPR crowd is quite fond of imperialism despite their use of the word as a pejorative. It's this nasty freedom that's been causing all the problems.
Very simple, Bev. You get a federal appointment first, then commit a federal crime. Easy-peasy.
ReplyDeleteT-Rav, That makes sense.
ReplyDeleteAnd is it just me, or does it seem that Petreaus would not be in this kind of trouble if he had never made Obama look bad?
tryanmax, I'm not surprised. I think it's their mindset. Everyone is a victim, except rich white guys, and imperialism is evil... except when done to impose something good on the heathens.
ReplyDeleteAddendum: Imperialism is okay so long as it's overseen by the U.N. and you don't call it that.
ReplyDeleteIt's been years since I listened to NPR/NY Public radio. I actually liked NPR...Science Friday, John Hockenberry...like I said, it's been years. But those were the years when they had interesting discussion, not indoctrination. On the otherhand, NY Public radio was the far left indoctrination version. I often found myself yelling at the radio. I was forced to sit in front of the radio and listen against my will when I worked in a MFA sweat shop.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Oliver Stone - Have you heard about his 10 part documentary "Untold History" about how awful and imperialist the US has been? It ought to be a real unifying experience.
Bev, I agree. I can already feel the nations of the third world uniting against us.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, NPR and NE Public Radio share a station, and the format is so terrible, it's impossible to tell where the one begins and the other ends. I do enjoy the jazz afternoon for the most part, so long as it's not that atonal avante guarde nonsense.
Andrew, it's not nice to make a god bleed, you know.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the Petraeus case--which I haven't really been following because, honestly, I have a hard time believing this is actually happening--you know that second woman that the biographer-mistress sent the emails to or whatever? Well, it turns out that she had shirtless photos sent to her by...er, the FBI agent investigating the biographer-mistress. No, really.
ReplyDeleteSomeone on Twitter observed that things have to be bad when you suddenly look like the most sane and balanced person in your own scandal.
T-Rav, True. Making the Messiah weep is a sin... in liberal eyes.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard that, but that's pretty hilarious. I like sending out pants-less pictures whenever I twitter. :)
As an aside, I have a really hard time caring about this. Either it's acceptable to have an affair or it isn't and I'm sick of trying to figure out when affairs are bad and when they are none of the public's business... too complex.
Bev and trynamax, I used to like PBS's News Hour because despite the obvious bias, they did a good job with the news. But they started downhill in the late 1990s.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried NPR... I think my head would explode.
