Share your thoughts! Winners... losers... overs... unders... can we please stop talking about the race of coaches and the sexuality of players... it's a damn football game!!!
don't like Ray Lewis, but I don't like San Francisco, and I do like Michael Orr, and Joe Flacco. Plus I like underdogs, so I guess my "rooting interest" will be with the Ravens. Still, the niners quarterback has emerged as a player who is hard to defend.
Still, with no real dog in the fight, I will be going to a great party that my neighbor hosts every year. The dinner is several courses, and the commercials may be more fun than the game.
On an unrelated front, I viewed the film Arbitrage tonight and it was quite good. Downton Abbey remains one of the best thing on television, and the beat goes on.
Jed, I used to go to Ravens games, so I supposed I should root for them, but I'm kind of on the fence. I think I'll just do my usual cheering and hope the Patriots are all in one place and a meteor strikes them. :D
Ha, I have to say, I never knew how much football fans in general disliked the Patriots (including myself). I honestly didn't care who went to the superbowl (since my Packers were out) as long as it wasn't the Patriots. I rooted for the Ravens to win just because I hate the Patriots so much, I'm so tired of seeing them in the Playoffs/superbowl.
I'm obligated to root for the 49ers, just because I live in Cali, but it should be a fun to watch regardless.
Jocelyn, In my vast travels around the net, I have found an amazing amount of hate for the Patriots in every corner -- it does my heart good. :) No other team comes anywhere near the kind of universal hate the Patriots generate.
The people I've spoken to generally see them as cheaters, as super arrogant, and as favored by the announcers. I don't think it helps either that their fans are so amazingly obnoxious. If you ever get the chance, check out some of the Boston papers after the Patriots lose. The comments are amazing. They are a mix of self-pity, rage and arrogantly calling the rest of us jealous. Yeah, right.
I agree, Jed! Downton Abbey is the best thing on TV right now! My girl and I are OBSESSED with it! We just finished watching all three seasons! Now, we're having a hard time getting rid of our fake British accents... Mad Men is no longer my favorite show!
Maggie Smith is just brilliant! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVMtffzbAwk
Being from the Bay Area, I guess it's mandatory for me to root for the 49ers!
I might not be a big football fan, more of a Pro-wrestling and basketball (Go Clippers!) fan, but I make the effort, every year to watch the Super Bowl. I need an excuse to eat a lot of buffalo wings! LOL
I agree on Patriots fans! They're almost as bad as Filipino Manny Pacquiao fans! I like Manny, but they are worshiping him like a God, it's scary! He's even a governor in his native land!
Andrew...What has amazed me the most in recent years, has been the evolution of the QB position. Now we not only have the pure passers like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, we also have this multi-versatile athlete like RGIII and Colin Kaepernick. It started with Michael Vick, but it has really progressed to the point that with the SF and DC QB's, we now have the best athlete on the field in the QB position.
It always amazed me that the QB position was never exploited more in the past. As a former QB, I always wanted to both pass AND run the ball. Being pretty good at both, I was always chided whenever I ran the ball instead of passing it into trouble and risking an interception. Oh well, I didn't have these young mens size and skill either!
"Mr. Corley, what exactly is this Super Bowl?" -Robert Shaw, Black Sunday
I'm not a sports guy but, per usual, I'll probably keep it on in the background. :-)
And on an unrelated note, I've been catching up on some movies:
-Cowboys and Aliens - bland and forgettable, but not a total disaster... they just didn't know what to do with it. Oh, and this was another big summer movie that was so dark, a few times I couldn't even tell who was in the scene!
-Up in the Air - sometimes it's nice to see a movie about - gasp! - people. So far, director Jason Reitman is 3 for 3 in his career. (I haven't seen Young Adult yet.)
-Shutter Island - I liked this movie but I'm wondering if they gave things away too early. I guess it's no surprise going into it that all is not what it seems but the question remains: should you keep the audience on edge from the beginning, or give them some room to breathe first?
-J. Edgar - Leo did an okay job but his voice-over narration sounded like a kid recalling his latest game of cops & robbers. And the old age make-up left much to be desired. Worth watching but not great. And Clint, turn on a key light once in a while!!
-American Reunion - definitely not a great movie but nostalgia may have played a part here. They didn't do much with the fact that the characters were now 30+, it was all standard hi-jinks. Jason Biggs' scenes were predictable but Seann William Scott was in his element as Stiffler and Eugene Levy got a nice subplot of his own. (P.S. I doubt 18-year-old kids today refer to The Spice Girls as "classic rock"!)
-The Hunger Games - very good movie and quite impressive from a technical standpoint as well. I can see why it was such a big hit and I look forward to the sequels. [sigh] Jennifer Lawrence... I just hope she manages to stay grounded. :-)
Hunger Games was fantastic. Jennifer Lawrence... she will be my future wife. :-)
On the movie front, I'm trying to watch some old movies. Plan to watch "How Green Was My Valley" and maybe "Strangers on a Train" or "Maltese Falcon" this weekend. At theaters I hope to catch "Stand Up Guys".
Severus and Kit! I LOVE DOWNTON ABBEY!!!! And I cannot WAIT to be old and BE The Dowager Dutchess!
My very favorite scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7fF4UHEXNQ
Oh, yeah, Football. I HATE THE PATRIOTS. However why are we talking about these "Hatriots" as Andrew called them? They aren't even in the Superbowl?? Must they spoil EVERY party?? - [Says the Dowager Dutchess of Commentarama]
See what I did there? I combined both topics! Yeah, I know, I am just THAT good!
Mr. Bates!!! What is it about him that makes him so sexy? If you want more of him watch "Lark Rise to Candleford".
Yes, I agree that the Bates/Anna romance plot is MUCH better than Mary/Matthew. That's because Mary is such a b-word!
[SPOILER ALERT]
I mean, she stands over the body of her dead sister and Edith asks if she thinks that they can ever be friends and Mary says "No." Now, that is really mean. Poor Edith.
Boy, am I out in the cold. I have no dog in the Super Bowl and I haven't watched any Downton Abbey. But I do have questions:
1. Can we even use the term "Super Bowl" or will the NFL come after us? Perhaps to keep it safe, we should just refer to "That Football Game" or perhaps "The Bowl that is Super."
2. If Downton Abbey is so great, how come no one started talking about it until after season 3?
Scott, RE: Hunger Games, If the sequels follow the books, then prepare to be disappointed.
Patriot, What amazes me if how obvious this is in hindsight, yet so many NFL "analysts" kept insisting that the athletic QB was a fad. To me it makes sense because it just expands the number of options you have that need to be defended.
I didn't like Shutter Island. I felt it started well for the first 20 minutes or so and then it became totally cliche. And the twist is so expected that it's almost insulting.
Tryanmax: Pity...See, if you watched Downton you'd appreciate that answer...just sayin]
1. We could call it the "Super Duper Football/Commercial Bowl", but then maybe your way is simpler. But what about the Puppy Bowl?? Do you have a dog in THAT? Tee-hee.
B. You just weren't listening. That's okay, neither was NBC when they turned down the opportunity to air it. Now they are kicking themselves. And PBS is making a fortune. But I really don't think it would be as popular as it is if it had been aired on NBC. It is very much a PBS/Masterpiece Theatre show. Soap opera at its best.
Anthony - watch it to "be social" - what a great answer. It's like a national social event.
Tryanmax - Great art comes to the masses late. Bev fully understands. Look, a lot of shows over the years that have addressed the British class system have been, shall we say "stuffy." That is the beauty of this show. Great characters, upstairs and down, great stories, real people; some good some bad, but none perfect. T.V. drama at it's highest form.
Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, she was, once again, delightful in Silver Linings Playbook. My only negative was some gratuitous bad language (see Die Hard 2) She is a great actress who is arriving. And my other young star, Brit Marling, is convincing in her biggest eposure to date . . . as Richard Gere's daughter in Arbitrage. This should not be surprising since she graduated from Georgetown with a degree in Economics and worked on Wall Street before switching to acting.
Anthony, I seem to have missed that entirely. Huh. Too bad, it looks good. Cartoon Network really irks me because they keep dropping good stuff and picking up garbage like the Powerpuff Girls.
That said, they have at times done some interesting stuff -- like Samurai Jack. That one is really stunning as cartoons go.
Ok, perhaps I overstated, but I am angry at the loss of "Johnny Quest" and "Josie and the Pussy Cats" and the notable reduction in the amount of Scooby Doo.
Andrew - same age as my oldest. You probably were less stressed back then. On the other hand, with Johnny Quest, Josie & the Pussycats, et al., maybe not so much
Patriot, don't forget Randall Cunningham, Fran Tarkenton and John Elway (to a lesser extent).
In fact, before the merger in the golden age of the NFL it wasn't uncommon for QB's to run the football if they saw an opening.
I reckon it seems relatively new because the 60's thruogh the 80, s and 90's it was somewhat uncommon to see most QB's run the ball.
I think the best QB is the one that will run (and throw accurately) however, if the QB runs too much then the risk of injury s much higher and there's lot's of examples of that.
On a side note I'm really happy we got Russel Wislson as the Seahawks QB! He's not big but he is fast on his feet and he works his butt off to get better and better. Plus, he's humble, and grateful for the chance to play. Good kid.
I guess I'll root for the Niners, but it won't break my heat if they lose.
Glad to see the Cheatriots put in their place. :^)
Ben, Me too. Every year when the Patriots lose several websites declare the next day Patriot's Schadenfreude Day. I like that!
I like Wilson a lot. I like RGIII a lot as well. There are some very high-character guys joining the NFL these days. I'm glad because I'm sick of the thugs.
In terms of QBs, I think the key factor for each of these guys is accuracy. Running is a bonus, but if you can't throw accurately then you'll never win.
As a diehard Steelers fan, I'm kind of obligated to root against Baltimore...all while hoping a meteor/jetliner/asteroid/comet/that-bomb-from-the-start-of-Star-Trek-Nemesis hits their stadium while they're playing (preferably with the Hatriots in town).
However, I've got to give the edge to the Ravens over the 49ers in this one. San Fran had it easy with the Packers playing man defense and the Falcons (as always) crumbling at the end.
The Ravens have had to get there the hard way, beating Luck, Manning and Brady. It's oddly similar to their run to SB XXXV. And I hate to say this- Art, Senior forgive me!- but it's also reminiscent of the Steelers run to SB XL.
(Pause for catcalls relating to SB XL officiating.)
So, in the end, I say battle-hardened Baltimore over SF by 7 or 10 points.
I suspect you're right about Baltimore. They really had a much harder road to get to the Super Bowl and that probably prepared them a lot better. Still, I expect this will be a good game either way.
On Atlanta, I'm amazed how Atlanta always falls apart. I don't know if the problem is coaching or over-confidence or what, but it's bizarre.
Andrew, I like RG3 as well. Hopefully, he will get better protection next season and not hafta run too much. If he has a bit more time to throw I'm pretty sure he would run less and avoid more injuries in the process, but that's easier said than done.
Wilson stated he felt bad that RG got hurt because he wanted the challenge of a healthy RG, plus he just doesn't like to see players put out of comission. Good sportsmanship is refreshing to see nowadays.
Cam Newton is another guy who falls into that category. Of course a lot of those guys are double threats until that first 250 pound linebacker cools their asses off with a knee shattering hit. Donovan McNabb was like that his first year or two, until he had his knee surgery.
Ben.....I always loved Fran Tarkenton playing QB. And Cunningham could tear it up. Even with all the athleticism now in the QB position, I still believe the truest measure of a great QB is the most intangible.....leadership. So while Montana, Flutie and others to alesser extent might not have had the physical skills other QB's had/have, they were true leaders who carried their teams to wins. This is the same quality that I think Tebow has that everyone ignores. No he's not the greatest QB ever, but all he does is win and gat his team to follow him. All the other crap swirling around him is just that. Why JAX doesn't pick him up I have no idea.
For a long time, Boston got some points in the "long suffering" category. The Pats usually sucked; the curse of the Bambino, and all that. Beisides, it was the insufferable Yankees, and Jersey Midgets who had their jackboots on their throats. Then they started to win, cheat, and became just as bad. Only Dallas Cowboy fans can hold a candle (America's Team?) "How 'bout them Cowboys? Does it get any more presumptuous than that? But now, Belicheck and the Cheatriots are disgusting, but you want to know what's even worse? Their fan base elected that 1/600 billionth Cherokee to the Senate. If they never won another game, it would be o.k. with me.
Now a team to love is the Eagles. Snowballs at Santa, while booing him, Concrete Charlie Bednarik laying on Jim Taylor and telling him he would get off him as soon as the game ended. Buddy Ryan and the Bounty Bowl, everyone's favorite stand-up guy, Mike Vick. They are the Rolling Stones of the NFL, even if their owner is a Boston Brahmin who serves proscuetto, mellon, and brie in the owner's box for God's sake. He is committed to winning, and didn't even move the team to Wussville Falls, Connecticut after he bought it.
And I agree with the anti-Ray Lewis sentiments here. With all the good character and sportsmen coming into the league now in high profile positions, it will be great to get rid of one of the most over the top thugs that has played the game. Should only help the NFL. Just read the accounts of the Atlanta murders he was involvd in and then tell someone he's a leader. He's a thug and showman.
I concur, Patriot. Montana, Flutie, Kelly, Starr, Stabauch (when the Cowboys were actually disciplined under Ton Landry who would bench star players if they missed a curfew or team meeting), and I could go on.
Tebow, if he gets another opportunity as QB will do well. As Andrew mentioned before, the sports media love to hate him because he's a white Christian.
Actually, most of the media hate Chreistians in general, but they would never attack a minority player who mentions God.
I laughed my butt off last season when Tebow took the Broncos to the playoffs and they beat the Steelers and Ben Roth. the rapist.
You could literally see these guys who hated so much on Tebow having anxiety attacks and darn near speechless, LOL. Especially over the 3:16 thing. It was fun to watch them eat their words and I hope Tebow gets another chance to do it.
I also concur about Lewis and other players who have become thugs still getting to play.
The NFL, coaches and team owners used to care about good character, sportsmanship, and discipline from their players but alas, I think those days are gone.
Now only talent matters, and there's no boundaries for young players, and too many bad examples for them to emulate.
I still think most of the players are pretty decent, but they all should be or be fired if they don't learn to be.
Kit - Love Dave Barry. Anything he says is the truth. You have good taste. Even if you are a youngin'!
BTW, next year's Super Bowl will be in Giant/Jet Stadium in NJ (though we all think of it as NY) and the new stadium stupidly does not have a retractable roof and is open to the elements...but, hey, it should be fun. Snow and all! Go...football!!
"the new stadium stupidly does not have a retractable roof and is open to the elements"
Bev, real men play football in the frozen cold and they like it! No pampering in SB XLVIII! (Though they could do with designing a new logo for a change.)
Anyway, this being Groundhog Day- again- this is the only time I can really post this wonderful quote:
"There is no way that this winter is *ever* going to end as long as this groundhog keeps seeing his shadow. I don't see any other way out. He's got to be stopped. And I have to stop him." (crazy chase through what is supposed to be Pennsylvania follows) "Don't drive angry, now! Don't drive angry!"
Given the slush I walked through this evening, I'm gonna take Phil's word over Phil's word on this one.
Super Bowl report from California: Brunch at our usual restaurant was particularly good today since, instead of the usual crowds, few showed up due to SB. Subsequently, we got the pick of the goodies and the full staff could be very responsive.

ReplyDeleteHowever, I've got to give the edge to the Ravens over the 49ers in this one.

Rustbelt, Nice thinking on the Nemisis Bomb! :)
ReplyDeleteI suspect you're right about Baltimore.
ReplyDeleteIf he has a bit more time to throw I'm pretty sure he would run less and avoid more injuries in the process, but that's easier said than done.
ReplyDeleteOoh, "Cheatriots"! I like that too!
ReplyDeleteBen.....I always loved Fran Tarkenton playing QB.
ReplyDeleteFor a long time, Boston got some points in the "long suffering" category. If they never won another game, it would be o.k. with me.
ReplyDeleteNow a team to love is the Eagles.
ReplyDeleteI concur, Patriot. Montana, Flutie, Kelly, Starr, Stabauch (when the Cowboys were actually disciplined under Ton Landry who would bench star players if they missed a curfew or team meeting), and I could go on.
ReplyDeleteTebow, if he gets another opportunity as QB will do well.
ReplyDeleteThe NFL, coaches and team owners used to care about good character, sportsmanship, and discipline from their players but alas, I think those days are gone.
Now only talent matters, and there's no boundaries for young players, and too many bad examples for them to emulate.
I still think most of the players are pretty decent, but they all should be or be fired if they don't learn to be.
Kitten cheerleaders?!?!?! Where's my shotgu---er, camera?
ReplyDeleteT-Rav - You be nice! You leave the kitten cheerleader alone! Do you hear me?? They are the sweet innocent ones, not the ones...well, you know.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, HAPPY GROUNDHOGS DAY!! Punxatawny Phil saw their shadow, so the cold weather will be ending soon. Trust the Groundhog.
I love the Staten Island Chuck, our little groundhog. He bit Mayor Bloomberg on the finger! It shows he had discriminating taste...
Good Super Bowl Quote:
ReplyDelete“Sharks are as tough as those football fans who take their shirts off during games in Chicago in January, only more intelligent. ” ― Dave Barry
Kit - Love Dave Barry. Anything he says is the truth. You have good taste. Even if you are a youngin'!
ReplyDeleteBTW, next year's Super Bowl will be in Giant/Jet Stadium in NJ (though we all think of it as NY) and the new stadium stupidly does not have a retractable roof and is open to the elements...but, hey, it should be fun. Snow and all! Go...football!!
"the new stadium stupidly does not have a retractable roof and is open to the elements"
ReplyDeleteBev, real men play football in the frozen cold and they like it!
And I have to stop him."
(crazy chase through what is supposed to be Pennsylvania follows)
"Don't drive angry, now! Don't drive angry!"
Given the slush I walked through this evening, I'm gonna take Phil's word over Phil's word on this one.

ReplyDelete:-)
I used to read Dave Barry a lot when he still had newspaper columns going. He's a hilarious guy.
ReplyDeleteSuper Bowl report from California: Brunch at our usual restaurant was particularly good today since, instead of the usual crowds, few showed up due to SB. Subsequently, we got the pick of the goodies and the full staff could be very responsive.
ReplyDeleteSuper Bowl rocks.
This isn't a game, this is a massacre. That kick return was crazy.
ReplyDeleteAnthony, It was suck a cool return that it wiped out the power. :D
ReplyDeleteThe power outage clearly didn't cool down the Ravens.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I spoke too soon. A football game had broken out.
ReplyDeleteAnthony, It's definitely getting interesting.
