The Boston bombing is frustrating on many levels. For one thing, it’s obviously frustrating that people were hurt or killed and that lives have been disrupted. Yes, people die every day, but it’s frustrating that this was done intentionally. What’s really frustrating, however, is that so many of our chattering/political class seem intent on giving these terrorists exactly what they need.
Terrorism is an act of impotence. Essentially, there are two types of people who commit terror. The first group is the impotent loner. This is someone who is so pathetic and insignificant that they decide the only way to make themselves into a complete person is to commit some act of heinous violence so the world finally pays attention to them. These weirdos are usually shooters.
The other type is the radical. This is someone without the brains or muscle to sway the public to their cause and without the courage to stand up publicly for a cause they think is right. In effect, they are impotent to create the change they want and they think that if they can kill enough people, then the world will take them seriously and will bend to their will.
What both groups have in common is a screaming NEED for recognition. They NEED the public to take an interest in them. The impotent loner gets off on the attention. To him, this is the moment that he enters the history books, the moment where he becomes something special instead of a nobody. These losers revel in the attention – good or bad, because it gives them what they need. . . it gives their lives significance. The other group needs the public’s attention too. They need the public to hear about their pathetic cause, be it some idiotic black-helicopter cult that thinks it stands for freedom or some gutter-religion that somehow thinks their flying spaghetti monster told them to kill non-believers. They need the public to acknowledge them and to fear them.
This is what they have in common. Without attention, they are nothing.
So what does this tell us? It tells us that the only way to fight terrorism is to deny terrorists the one thing that makes it worthwhile: attention. Indeed, it is a law of human nature that people don’t do things they don’t think will give them what they want. So to stop conduct, you take away the benefit. This works with kids, it works with dogs, it works with everyone.
Unfortunately, this is where things go wrong. In our modern media world, the chattering class loves to exploit terrorism for their own gain. Within minutes of the bombing, journalists are salivating at the opportunity to throw out crocodile tears to earn ratings. “Good God! There could be a Pulitzer if I find the right words!!!” They can’t get enough. The papers, the radio, the television all go into uber-coverage mode. Every detail must be revealed, analyzed and speculated over a million times. “Oh... what does this all mean?!!!”
Then the political savages get started. The conspiracy nuts spread their poison to make themselves feel important too. Meanwhile, the Chris Mathewses of the world try to use the event to smear groups they don’t like. “Must be the Tea Party!!!” The Democrats actually called a press conference to blame the Boston bombing on sequester. At least none of them tried to wear a bloody shirt this time. The conservative chatterers are no better. They start pointing fingers at Islamic terrorism within seconds. Soon the left and the right are hacking away at each other, with both giving all the terrorists of the world. . . exactly. . . what. . . they. . . want: attention and significance. Suddenly, the impotent terrorist isn’t really so impotent because the whole world seems to be dancing to their tune.
These enablers even do stories pointing fingers at other people for encouraging terrorism.
Then comes the next wave. This is when everyone cancels events and holds vigils and does entire shows dedicated to talking about the horror of these events and how the world has changed. This is when bloggers and talk radio hosts and whatnot demonstrate how impotent they are against the terrorists by struggling to find ways to express how helpless they feel. Sure, they talk about being resolute, but their words ring “helpless.” This is the moment the impotent terrorists realize their power as they see the helplessness of their victims.
Finally, we get a break in the case. We find out who did it! Woo hoo! It’s time to really exploit this sucker! Journalist after journalist will dive right in. They will splash the name of the impotent fools all over the news. They will analyze everything they did and why they did it. They will repeat manifestos and lists of demands and will carefully explain why we should all care about this weirdo’s cause -- often with a fake disclaimer that they don’t endorse the manifesto they are publicizing. This completes the cycle. This immortalizes the impotent-loner or the forgotten-causer. For a brief moment, their pathetic, impotent little cause is the most important story on Earth, and their names now sit next to Jesus, Caesar, Hitler, and Reagan in the history books. And the only reason that happened is because our media and our political class are so determined to play right into the terrorists’ hands.
This is the problem.
If you want to stop terrorism, you deny them the benefit of being terrorists. You don’t spend time dwelling on what happened. You never explain why they did what they did. You never tell the world their names. You make it impossible for these impotent little pricks to find satisfaction through terror and you let them die unknown. That deprives them of everything they were after.
Unfortunately, our entire chattering class is determined to do its damnedest to help these people succeed. They are to blame here.

yep. Jim Geraghty has a quote from someone on his Morning Jolt that one of the good things about not knowing who the bad guy is has given some time to focus on the victims and the heroes, as well as the evil as evil rather than for a "reason". True, but there are so many who are trying to get their spin in there and who can't help chattering.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note, A&E has a new TV show, "The Killer Speaks", where they tell the story of some murder from the killers' perspectives - WTF!!!!
(the ticker says Pat Summerall died - he was the voice of football for my youth. RIP)
ReplyDeleteWell....to a point, yes. However, I don't think we should ignore the fact that many of these terrorist groups are highly organized and well-funded. One could make the argument that terrorist acts are an urban form of guerrilla warfare, only carried out against civilians: The goal isn't just to get attention, it's to create terror within the "enemy" population.
ReplyDeleteNot giving them so much attention would probably frustrate them, but it's not going to stop them. They'll just carry out larger atrocities, so that we have to talk about them. In any case, I don't see a world in which we have a 24-hour media that doesn't give this stuff round-the-clock attention.
Just for fun, here a great article from Salon. If we could only stop THIS kind of article, we would be better off.
ReplyDeleteLink
But this is how it ALWAYS goes these days. Days wringing hands and endless articles about the horror, candlelight vigils, etc. Hollywood-types interject themselves with the "Oh, woe is me! How violent we are! How is it possible???"
At the same time the bottom feeders are exploiting the victims and their families for their own purposes - news bylines, 24/7 filler for the news cycle, political fodder of the chattering classes. And eventually, the victims and their families become willing participants in the circus.
If I am tired of anything, it is this constant scenario.
And once again, we can't call it "terrorism" even if it IS whether it is foreign OR domestic!
rlaWTX, That's the only people the focus should be on, the victims and helping them. But that's not what our chattering class is interested in unless they're famous victims.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't seen that about A&E, but it doesn't surprise me. The bad guys have become the heroes in Hollywood ever since they decided serial killers are cool.
rlaWTX, I saw that. That's sad. Summerall was the voice of football for me too. RIP,
ReplyDeleteT-Rav, That's true, that this wouldn't stop all terrorist. But it would stop a good number because they wouldn't get what they are after.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of the "well funded" groups, I would change that to "fanatical." Funding isn't the issue, it's the level of insanity that's the issue. The IRA in the past and al Qaeda today wouldn't stop because they were fanatical. But they couldn't win either. Terrorists have never won because humans don't respond the way the terrorists assume.
That was the thing the Allies discovered about bombing. It didn't break the German will to resist, it strengthened it because it made the Germans come together. Terrorism is ultimately counter productive.
Bev, Agreed 100%! I'm really tired of it. I'm tired of the exploitation of these events (tragedies, accidents, murders, terrorism) for their own gain. I'm tired of the fake games they play to pretend they aren't exploiting it... "no, I'm honoring it... no, I'm trying to understand it." No, you are exploiting it. You are marketing it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm really sick of these same sickos then trying to point fingers at everyone else. And I agree completely about the families. I think it's sick to wave a bloody shirt to get attention. I think it's even sicker to pull the victims into this stuff. And I have no tolerance for the victims them joining in the exploitation.
Frankly, I'm done with all of it. I know we can't stop it, but I'm not going to play along anymore either. I'm not going to talk about these things anymore and I'm not going to excuse people like Chris Matthews who do exploit this. If I ever meet the guy, I will tell him point blank that he and the rest have a lot of blood on their hands, because they do.
But Andrew - You know who didn't allow themselves to be exploited? I was just thinking about his today - The victims' families of Timothy McVeigh in Oklahoma and the victims' families of Major Hassan at Ft. Hood. That is all I will say.
ReplyDeleteBev, That's true. And I will say what you didn't, those are very "mid-western/conservative" areas and people in this part of the country don't like to see themselves as victims and don't like to exploit tragedies.
ReplyDeleteI can tell you, about this Boston thing, that while our "elites" are busy talking about this incessantly, nobody is talking about it around here. Around here, people go about their lives. They recognize the tragedy of it for the victims and they will probably give some money to charities to help them and they want to see the terrorist punished, but they aren't fascinated by it and they don't sit there like crack addict or gossip columnist waiting for their next news fix.
Wow, check out this quote from Politico’s Dylan Byers:
ReplyDeleteFor many journalists I’ve spoken with today, this ignorance is tortuous. The identification of the attacker(s) and the reasons for the attack will likely have enormous political (and potentially geopolitical) ramifications, which will vary greatly depending on whether the attacker(s) is domestic or foreign, acting alone or as part of an organization. We’re standing on the verge of a very important national conversation about something, and we have no idea what it is.
I want to know the cause — not because I’m eager to politicize the tragedy, but because I want to know where our national conversation is headed.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. This guy wants to exploit this so he can whine about his political desires.
I understand and agree with everything you wrote but it is unrealistic. Wondering who, how, or why is a natural reflex. Is there anyone who really doesn't care who or why? We also live in a free society where anyone can say any stupid think they have had.
ReplyDeleteI, and I suspect many others as well, do tire of the constant news coverage especially the first 24 hours. But I also find it interesting that the bombs where homemade and they used pressure cookers. I am also more interested when all of the information and investigation is though to see everything laid out (you know, like real journalism).
I will say that I have a small semblance of respect when a group takes credit for a bombing and even suicide bombing. This was so cowardly.
By the way, this was a plot to eliminate our 2nd amendment rights. Homemade bomb made from gunpowder. We can't have regular people have access to gun powder. We must limit the purchase of bullets as well. To prove this, there will be more attacks across the country. Obama will have to call a state of emergency...At least this is what I read on another blog last night. It must be true; they don't put anything on the internet that isn't true.
ReplyDelete:)

ReplyDeleteThis picture (if it shows up) just illustrates what you are saying. 1000 reporters outside Boston Court House FOR NO REASON!
Koshcat, I know it's sadly unrealistic. But I still thought it had to be said. And I agree that knowing these things is something people do want to know, but there's a huge difference between: (1) it was a bomb, here are the people who were hurt, here's the guy who did it, he's a jerkoff Islamic/survivalist... the end and (2) the never-ending orgy of coverage in which plastic newsreaders tell you that they aren't glorifying what is happening while they obsessively pour over every detail and make the killers larger than life.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, in our current culture, the worst of us (journalists) will always misbehave in ways which feed these things. I know that won't change.
So my point is really just that I'm sick of it and I'm not going to play this game anymore. Other than mentioning these things and wishing the victims well, I'm just not interested anymore in what the killers wanted or who they are. I'm not going to read articles about it or contribute to the ratings of broadcasts about it, and I'm not going to play the game of pretending that guys like Chris Matthews and other journalists aren't enablers.
You just want to starve Sid 6.7. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat we can do is just what you recommended; not watch. If enough people did this, they would eventually respond.
Koshcat, Like vultures aren't they?
ReplyDeleteOn the conspiracy theory angle, I kind of go back and forth on whether or not these people are insane morons, or if they are just trying to milk the insane morons of their money? I suspect it's actually a little of both.
In truth, you can build a conspiracy theory about anything because it's premised on certain bits of false logic that let you turn any event into a conspiracy -- particularly, the ability to create evidence from the lack of evidence. I know that guys like Alex Smith understand this because he makes a fortune using these kinds of lies and distortions to pimp his fantasies. What I'm not 100% sure about is whether or not he actually believes it himself or if he's just cynical. I suspect a little of both.
We should open our own conspiracy blog and charge admission.
Koshcat, Exactly. That's the best that we can do. Stop watching and hope that others stop watching and maybe some day, the media will need to change their ways if they want to win us over. :)
ReplyDeleteI had to look up Sid 6.7. Yes! Let's starve him! LOL! :)
ReplyDeleteNot the greatest of movies but I liked the premise and it was the first time I ever paid attention to some actor named Russel.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it actually, but now I want to check it out. I'm a back fan of Crowe and the movie looks like it has an interesting topic.
ReplyDelete** Off Topic **
ReplyDeleteFYI, the expanded gun check deal has failed in the Senate. And like that, the liberal dream of any sort of gun control pretty much dies. Fund raising time! ;P
Andrew - I just read that - 54-46 vote. Place your bets! How long will it take for them to blame the Republicans who voted against, but not the Democrats who ALSO voted against?
ReplyDeleteI have dibs on 10-30 minutes...let the games begin.
Bev, What I find really fascinating is that there is no filibuster threat. They could only get 8 (or 12) people to agree to filibuster. So basically, they just shot the bill down because they decided they couldn't beat a filibuster that wasn't going to happen. Bizarre. It's like something out of a comedy.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I think you are being generous in your 10-30 minute estimate. Those articles and speeches are ready to go.
ReplyDeleteWell the good news is for right now the Libs are blaming Harry Reid. But then again, we haven't gotten to the 10-30 min mark yet. :-\
ReplyDeleteBev, We should defend Harry Reid and freak them out.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, we should also vociferously deny that Harry Reid is secretly a right-wing conservative who we are paying to help stifle the Democratic agenda because that is absolutely 100% not at all true and how dare anyone suggest that! I'm outraged.
Well, what is a little more damning for Harry is that he was one of the Dems who voted against...NRA paid rightwing nutjob that he is!
ReplyDeleteBev, Should we contact his office and ask for a denial... which would be proof that he actually has something to hide (because why would he deny this if he had nothing to hide?).
ReplyDeleteSay what you might about Oliver Stone's diminishing strengths as a filmmaker since his late 80s/early 90s heyday, but I think Natural Born Killers remains a genius of a film for its indictment of the whorish media and the general public who feed the beast.
ReplyDeleteEric, I concur. Stone was right on the mark with that one -- both in terms of how the media encourages these people and how the public rewards them for doing it.
ReplyDeleteAs for his diminishing abilities, that's sadly true. I rarely agreed with Stone, but I loved his films. Sadly, I haven't liked his recent ones very much though. It's like he lost his punch.
I am not so sure that Islamist Radicals have not made gains with their terrorist activities. Certainly they damage themselves on the "world stage" but this is not the stage they worry about.
ReplyDeleteBin Ladin spoke of the Great Satan and the little Satan. we all know that the Great Satan is the Us and we assume the little Satan was Israel but there I think we are wrong. the Little Satan were the Saudi Princes, Qadaffi, Mubarack, even Sadaam, Assad in Syria.
According to what I read OBL et. al. felt that the people running Islamic countries were dictators who were proped up by the Great Satan the US and were either apostates who did not deserve to be called Muslim or were atheists. After decades of terrorism in this countries they decided to attack the Great Satan.
The first attacks were ignored. So they escalated. embassies, the Coal and finally 9/11. They caused so much death and destruction we had to address it. By galvanizing the Muslim street against the US as the greatest enemy they changed the dynamic. We could no longer quietly fund dictators and we started to see these dictators as threats to ourselves as well.
I am not so sure how much credit should be given to Al Qeada itself but today there are at least two little Satan's that have been overthrown and those countries are being taken over in part by the Muslim brotherhood. Whetehr OBL can be gioven the credit for it or not his vision was enacted there and may yet happen in Syria as well. Even Turkey is being radicalized.
As to attention Al Qeada is different in this respect. They send out videos listing their demands but they do not tie them to terrorsit acts. They never take credit for these acts themselves but instead force the governments to connect the dots themsleves using that moment of ignornce as added terror. when they speak of it they almost talk of the terror as in the third person. Your country's policies cause people to commit these acts, blah blah blah
In this respect Al Qeada is much more sophisticated and deadly. I am almost certain that the Boston bombing was not a black helicopter white supremicist group because I highly doubt such a group being this successful could go one day with out taking credit for it. but we will see......
