US Open Open Thread...

I am spending a glorioius two days at Flushing Meadows, Queens at the US Open Tennis Tournament! What fun. It's like a tennis festival with food, drinks, and lots and lots of tennis. So you'll have to come up with something to talk about today and I will try to jump in if I can tear myself away from centre court.

And just in case you have not heard, it was announced today that Gene Wilder passed away Monday morning from complications due to his recently diagnosed Alzheimers Disease. He was truly one of the great ones. RIP LINK to NY Times obituary

  1. So sad to hear about MR. Wilder. Blazing Saddles is one of my favorites. Of course, he was 83 so we cannot complain that he died too young. Here's to hoping he and Gilda are cracking everyone up in the afterlife.

  2. Bev, I have to say that I've always found the name to be funny... Flushing Meadows. Hmm. Toilet fields?

  3. I loved Gene Wilder. There was just something about him that though he played schlemiels, they were never creepy and always sympathetic. He IS the definitive Willy Wonka. Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka was just a creepy pedophile.

  4. Andrew - Funny you should say that because that is EXACTLY what I think too. As a matter of fact, it was a manure dumping ground..."The park was created from the former dumping ground, which was characterized as "a valley of ashes" in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The site, known at the time as the Corona Ash Dumps, which was being filled with ashes from coal-burning furnaces, as well as with horse manure and garbage"

  5. Bev,

I loved Gene Wilder too. He was always funny and, best of all, good natured. That's missing so badly with modern comedians who think being cynical is what sells.

  6. A manure dumping ground? They should have called it Pooping Meadows... or Bull Run. ;-)

  7. Since this is an open thread, over at the Federalist Mollie Hemmingway has a post about why Dolly Parton should be President of the United States. In the comments somebody suggested Mike Rowe. I've always secretly wanted Bill Whittle in the Oval Office. The Federalist has also had some posts recommending Duane (The Rock) Johnson. What do you guys think about those choices, or anybody else you'd like? Thoughts?

  8. P.S. I'm going to bed now, so I'm not ignoring anybody when I don't respond. I'll read this first thing in the morning.
