New York State of Mind and other stuff...

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, COMMENTARAMA!

So, let's just dive right in on the local news:

1. It's official. Anthony "The Weiner" Weiner has formally thrown his hat in the ring (as of midnight Wednesday on the web and definitely not on Twitter)to run for Mayor to replace the irreplaceable Michael "Benito/Hugo/Fidel" Bloomberg as Mayor of ALL Manhattan and those other Boroughs too. Here, take a look at this LINK if you don't believe me and here is his talking points memo [don't let the obvious phallic-like symbology make you soft...{{{cough, cough}}}...on his message]. Really, his graphic designer should be jailed.

There is an upside and a downside to Weiner's run. [Stop laughing!]. The upside is that he will be responsible for some of THE best headlines that the NY Post will ever produce. I even bet that they are lining up a whole slew of new headline writers dedicated just to Candidate Weiner. Sadly, the downside is that Anthony Weiner really is the best candidate for Mayor in the present line up.

2. In other New York news:

Yeah, yeah. I know this will come as a great shock to you, but...it happened again. Another New York State Legislator was forced to resign this week. This time he wasn't arrested first, but the week is not over yet. His name is Vito Lopez (D/Brooklyn), a longtime Assemblygroper and HIS high crime/misdemeanor this time is the on-going sexual harrassment of numerous young female staff members. As if that is not bad enough, longtime Speaker of the New York State Assembly Sheldon Silver (D/Manhattan and Speaker since 1994) arranged with the current Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D/Gov. hopeful) to secretly pay off at least two women (and counting) with taxpayer funds.

And, as if in some 18th Century Moliere farce, Shelly Silver vows stated that he is as upset as anyone that he had to protect his very good friend and pay women off secretly with taxpayer funds and will introduce legislation to make sure that he can never be able to do it again...oh, and he's really, really sorry. Since he apologized and all, he sees no need to step down as the Speaker at all and anyway, his other very best friend is the Chairman of the Ethics Committee That Investigates These Things and will be investigating the "ethics of it all" just as soon as he finishes investigating everyone else in the Legislature.

Oh, and Mr. Lopez resigned in disgrace, yet has decided to run for New York City Council. Unbelievable, but he may win. Yeah, so who is it that is having a War on Women again?

3. Oklahoma Tornado relief in two parts:

Part 1 - This one was bad, folks. The sustained winds were clocked at 200 miles per hour and the funnel was more than a mile wide. Two grade schools full of children were destroyed and a whole community of homes and businesses were wiped off the map. Amazingly only 24 people are reported dead, so far. If you are of a mind to help in some way, Text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief, donate online or by phone at 1-800-RED CROSS. You won't hear the people of Oklahoma complain...they will quietly pick up the pieces, rebuild, and move on.

Part 2 - My rant - Not 2 hours after the devastating tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma and the word spread around the country and while first responders were pulling dead children from the rubble of a flattened grade school, the liberal blogs and Twitter feeds lit up with crap about how Sens. Coburn and Inhofe should be made to beg for any kind of government relief since both had the audacity to vote against Hurricane Sandy relief and they should get what they deserve...nothing. Of course, both voted against Sandy relief because of the extra added pork added that had nothing to do with relief - funds for fisheries in Mississippi and Alaska and for a roof that need fixing at the Smithsonian and the like. But, hey, why let dead children get in the way of making those conservative yahoos suffer.

Oh, and speaking of conservative yahoos, this choice Tweet from Lizz Winstead, writer for The Daily Show:

Now in all fairness, she tweeted that before she knew there would be dead children and a whole town destroyed and stuff...so give to the Red Cross 'cause she feels mighty bad about herself right now.

And finally - I saw this video and it just astounded me. It has very little to do with politics...or does it?

Now if we can just teach them to draft legislation, we might be saved...

P.S. Just when you thought the Tea Party was losing steam along comes the IRS to reenergize us. It is about all the Tea Party groups can thank the IRS for these days...but you didn't hear any of this from me and you don't even know who I am, right?

  1. A quick aside for all who missed it... cough cough including us cough cough... Happy Birthday to Commentarama which turned 4 the other day! :)

  2. Bev, I want to be paid off with taxpayer funds!

Wow, Weiner is going all out on the phallic symbols isn't he?

Totally agree on the tornado, how despicable. Leftists really are subhuman.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Bev - great post, although I'm not sure what it says if Weiner is the best candidate of the crop. I mean ... really. I agree with your rant, entirely. There is a whole phylum of politico's for which nothing, I mean nothing is sacred. Now I do love elephants, and this explains why.

Andrew and Bev - happy anniversary to Commentarama. I've been there for them all, and can't say enough how much I've enjoyed the blog :)

  4. Jed, I'm a big fan of elephants too.

On the blog, you're welcome! And you definitely have been here from the beginning and you've definitely helped make the place what it is through your wit and your wisdom. Thanks! :)

  5. I love the snarky comments the press is coming up with on this race,,,"Weiner is in" etc...it's great...BTW, if he does win, he deserves it.

  6. Bev, you must've missed Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D, RI) blaming Republicans for the OK tornado in a speech only moments following the disaster, linking GOP policies to global warming and suggesting that conservative states are undeserving of disaster relief.

Also, ever notice that whenever a disaster strikes a red state, liberals always crow that it is Earth/Gaia/God/The Giant Spaghetti Monster exacting revenge on eeeeevil conservatives, but whenever a disaster strikes a blue state, it's red-staters' fault? Talk about a skewed world view.

Finally, on Wiener's rise (I can't help myself): New York is the Capital of the Middle Class? New York is consistently ranked as one of the most unequal cities in the nation in terms of wealth and income. I realize that all (savvy) politicians play to the middle class, but isn't that attempt a little obvious? No, if I had to guess, the capital of the middle class is probably in one of those out-of-the-way places that New Yorkers make fun of.

  7. Oh, um....Happy Birthday Commentarama! Your card is in the mail, I promise.

I loved the Drudge Report headline the other day: "Weiner Goes In." Oh Lord.

    RE: Anniversary

Let it be known that your Special 4th Anniversary edition invisible "I Heart Commentarama" t-shirts should be in your mailbox right now...go out and look, right now. If you don't see it, ask your postal delivery professional if he/she has it in their mailbag...I dare you.

    Sincerely
    The Management

  9. Critch - I am telling you EVER single headline is golden. The NY Daily News is getting in on the action too. Weiner has actually been "unavailable" since announcing his candidacy in the middle of the night. I think he thinks that fi he stays out of sight, it will all blow itself...out and he can be fully re-erected...er..resurrected politically speaking of course.

I also think there is an element that if he can get it all out then eventually everyone will begin to feel bad about themselves for being grade school bullies for tormenting him about his last name.

  10. Happy birthday, Mr. Commentarama, happy birthday to you...

Anyway - the OK comments: whenever some right-winger decides to say that Katrina was because God was mad at NOLA or something else equally goofy, the Repub/conservative/right-wing world rises up to say, NO! and the speaker-out-of-turner apologizes abjectly (and then has his words thrown back in his face in the most vile of ways for years, even upon and after his death).
However, when lefties make similar inane comments about the Wrath of Gaia upon the red-state unbelievers, we get --- --- crickets.

Weiner: Since I do not see the New York papers, I expect regular updates of the most provocative headlines!!!

Ethics: If I ever decide to go into politics (not bloody likely), my first order of business will be to cozy up to the Ethics folks "Who Investigate Things"!!!

Elephants: OK - even a critter painting with its nose is a better artist than I am!!! (and "aaaaawwwwww") (and, that's a heck of a training program!)

  11. Dear Management, that would be hilarious!

    "Where's my invisible t-shirt! You've stolen it!"

    ReplyDelete
  12. Bev, If you don't mind....

Folks, please go buy my book. It's still $1 for the kindle but it will be going up this weekend. The paperback is available now, but it's $6.99.

    BUY ME

  13. Andrew - "Where's my invisible t-shirt! You've stolen it!" - I am going to use this scenario to more easily effectuate my post-Obamacare retirement plan - mandatory and permanent residence in s state owned/run mental health facility paid for by the good people of the United States of Obamerica.

    Also, BUY ANDREW'S BOOK NOW!

Btw, Andrew, will there be a version that I can buy (like .pdf or paper form) that I can send to the TP groups and TP radio talk show hosts that I know?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Bev, That would get you mental health coverage!

There is a paperback version. It's a little pricy right now at $6.99. But I can get you cheaper copies ($2.70). If all else fails, I could lower the price to $4.99 for a couple days (but I am not allowed to go lower than that).

Can you e-mail me and tell me what you have in mind?

On the pdf, I can't do that because it would violate Amazon's rules about their pricing. The best I can do right now is the $1 Kindle. You can get apps to read it on any device however.

    ReplyDelete
  15. BOOK UPDATE

I've lowered the price of the PAPERBACK to $4.99 until Monday (that's the minimum I can go). If anyone wants one, please buy it once Amazon reflects the price. It will save you a couple dollars.

    Here's the link: Paperback

  16. I also don't buy the story that Weiner grew up playing stick-ball. It's too cheesy. The inconsistency in his video makes me ill. Too many regulations...I supported true health care reform...

It was a$$hats like him that has led to too many regulations!

I wish I could draw as well as the elephant.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Just want to say that the Commentarama invisible T shirt is EXCELLENT! The flexible cloth embedded emitters are emulating the scene from the back of the shirt perfectly (thereby rendering it invisible). Been spending the day frighting the door to door salesmen as all they can see is a disembodied head over an independently operating torso.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Koshcat - A. I wish I could draw as well as that elephant too. Even though I am sure he is trained to "draw", there is a self awareness that is beautiful. And I am surprised at how delicately he can use his trunk.

    B. It says alot about the other candidates that Weiner is the best in the field. If you think that HE has led too many regulations, imagine the other in the field that are so far left that they all make Bloomberg look like a real piker in the regulating personal habits department.

    ReplyDelete
  19. K - Oh, you got THAT one. No one was supposed to get that one yet (but since it is invisible, we were quite sure where we left it!) That is just a prototype, so be careful. We haven't fully worked out the "kinks" and aren't quite sure that you will actually get your "body" back. If you have any problems, please direct all inquiries to our "legal" department inside to the IRS Building in Cleveland.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tryanmax - there's a Weiner joke in there somewhere...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Can I get another T-shirt? I set mine down and can't find it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bev, Yes, that's where our legal department is. You just have to scream as you run past the guard... that's the password. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Koshcat, I thought the same thing about tryanmax's comment!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Koshcat, Andrew, in that case, never mind. I'm set.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So much for our hard-earned PG-13 rating. :(

"Is that an elephant in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think you blew the PG-13 rating in a rant the day after election day.

    ReplyDelete
  27. LOL! Yeah. We're more like a PG-21.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It looks like Lois Lerner is gone as the Obamacare administrator now that she's plead the Fifth.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Well, that's something at least.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @ Andrew - bought the book.

    ReplyDelete
  31. darski, Great! :)

Out of curiosity, can you buy from Amazon.us or do you need to buy from Amazon.ca? I've noticed that I sell in both places, but I can't set up homepages in Canada (I can in the UK, Germany and France).

    ReplyDelete
  32. So now Holder is in the hot seat. He is the one signed off on the bugging the Fox News reporters phones and his parent's phone too. Even HuffPo is calling for his head...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bev, When things go wrong... they go WRONG! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Andrew and Bev, I think Lerner will go before Holder. If she's forced to plead the Fifth over and over again before Congress, that's going to look really bad, and we've reached the point where someone's head has to be put on a pike.

    ReplyDelete
  35. T-Rav, I think you're right. Someone needs to go and Lerner is the easy target. They can get rid of her and still pretend this was all low-level stuff. Sacrificing Holder would be harder... though I suspect he will ultimately need to go as well to save Obama.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Out of curiosity, can you buy from Amazon.us?

I buy from the US. They keep telling me to switch to .ca but I see no reason to do so :P

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks darski, I was curious. Canada is one of the few places where Amazon has set up a shop and I need to sign up to sell there, but they don't let me set up an author page (Brazil, Italy, Spain and Japan are the others). Everywhere else I can either set up an author page or they don't have a local Amazon and the people buy through some other country. It's an interesting set up.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I heard on Fox this morning that Lerner was asked to resign and she refused. She is now on paid leave. Unbelievable!

Congrats to Commentarama for 4 years!! Here's to many more!

    ReplyDelete
  39. TJ, It's annoying isn't it? People act like being on paid leave is such a horrible thing. It's like a paid vacation!
