Let It Burn?

As you know, conservatism/the GOP has a lot of internal problems right now. They cover a lot of ground, but I think they especially relate to what kind of party or movement the Right wants to be. I don't have an answer myself, but it's best to talk about it.

Just about a year ago, us Commentaramans (not sure if that's a word, but I'm rolling with it) rang in the presidential election. As you may remember if you were on the site, things got kinda ugly. Profane rants, gnashing of teeth, condemning the public in general and anyone who might have been even slightly responsible for Obama's victory, slightly inebriated excoriations of said groups on Facebook, etc. I don't remember what everyone else on the blog was doing.

Anyway, the general bitterness lingered, and over the next few days, a lot of us discussed how we were going to relate to Obama-voters from now on. The consensus: Let it burn. Screw trying to mitigate the Dems' screw-ups, or make the pain of ObamaCare slightly less severe. Boycott all organizations and businesses associated with TOTUS, only patronize those who lean Right, let the liberals ram everything they want through the government, and allow the rest of the country to choke on it. It didn't entirely stick, of course (though I for one have only ordered pizza from Papa John's since then), but it was so mean-spirited, and it felt sooo, so good.

Again, such a course is not exactly being followed. Consider the battles of the past year in Congress. Say what you will about the merits of the amnesty fight, there's no doubt those opposing any kind of immigration reform truly believed it was their duty to keep Obama from bringing into the country a whole new voting bloc for the Dems and leaving the Left in total control for the foreseeable future--whether or not that would have happened is of course another story, but they clearly believed it would have and that they ought to prevent it. Ditto for the whole ObamaCare/shutdown blowup last month. Congressional Republicans had no intention of letting ACA in all its awfulness come crashing down on the public without a fight. Regardless of their strategic or tactical wisdom (or lack thereof), they're still invested in the governing process and contesting the Left's agenda where possible (at least in theory).

That's not going to change. But I do wonder where much of the base stands on this. Browsing the blogosphere as I often do, I come across a lot of loose talk about how we ought to have just let the government go bankrupt and crash, forcing people to take responsibility for themselves instead of relying on DC, inducing a constitutional crisis, and basically just starting from scratch. Of course it sounds vague; no one knows how it would go off in reality. It is, however, a very tempting idea.

Of course, this is kind of an updated, slightly more bitter version of the whole "going Galt" idea from a year or two ago. It comes from Atlas Shrugged and suggests that the productive elements of society should, in effect, cease to be productive, cloistering themselves and their resources while the unproductive hangers-on are forced to either starve or adapt. I've always been of two minds about this idea. There are days when I would opt for the whole "nuke the system"/"post-apocalyptic" scenario, especially when there's a particularly outrageous story in the news--days when I would accept such a breakdown, hardship and all, just to force the Left and all its constituents into brutal reality. But again, the question is, could we accept this in reality?

The truth is, as much as a lot of us would like to fantasize about burning it all down and starting over, we are very rooted in the world we live in. We like hanging out with our friends, watching the game on TV, living a quiet life--all that. And while I would never suggest the kind of government we have right now makes that possible--truth be told, it kinda undermines it--the stability that comes from a lack of inner political turmoil does. Efforts to collapse the system might not hurt us right away, and the long-term damage might well be very survivable, but there would be effects from provoking crisis after crisis and a breakdown in government efficiency. Our international financial position would suffer, our infrastructure would decay, many places would see a breakdown in law and order....think Detroit writ large. It might not be horrific, and we might be better for it afterward, but it would hardly be pleasant to experience.

As a political philosophy, conservatism has always recognized this on some level. Among its first principles are 1) A reluctance to sacrifice the personal well-being of others for the sake of some quasi-utopian vision of government, 2) A belief that continuity and gradualism are preferable to rapid and violent change, and perhaps most importantly 3) The certainty that there is always much good in the world, and that it ought not be thrown away for no reason. All of this militates against the "going Galt"/"Let it burn" theory.

I won't say this means we shouldn't at times sacrifice our peace and tranquility to go toe-to-toe with the Left on something of importance. Obviously, we have to every now and then. It also doesn't mean I won't indulge fantasies about applying the wrecking ball to the diseased parts of society every now and then. Rather, it means that if we engage in real talk about bringing down the government or attacking whole institutions, we ought to pause and consider the cost before going any further with it. And who knows, it may be worth it. But make sure it is first.

Kind of a tangential issue, I know. But as it's a commonly circulated idea among some on the Right, it's worth talking about a little. Any thoughts?

(Note: Due to an academic conference/ego-stroking session in St. Louis over the weekend, I won't be available to reply to comments, so feel at liberty to rummage through the thread. If I'm not back next week, it means I and other distraught Cardinals fans have decided to end it all.)

Dealing With Morons

I’m sometimes asked by people who know me why I’m so intransigent toward liberals. (Actually, they don’t put it in those terms; what they ask is, “Why do you have to be such a jerk on Facebook?”) I often don’t know how to answer them…and then along comes a reminder of how idiotic liberals can get.

There was a small dust-up this week in the proud city of Columbia, MO (my current place of residence). It appears that the police department was asking the city government to purchase an armored vehicle for its use; Columbia has a population of 100,000+, and some neighborhoods are better than others, so this wouldn’t exactly be an idle investment. Anyway, for whatever reason someone in the city’s Police Officers Association decided to strengthen their case by posting an appeal on their Facebook page.

Here is the wording they used:
CPD wants a new armored vehicle. Partly b/c when you drive up in one, people surrender and come out of the house. BUT….if CPD rolled up in the new Mercedes 6x16, you KNOW all the boys in the hood would come running out the house – just to admire your ride! I say we ride up in style.
I don’t really get the humor and the grammar leaves a bit to be desired, but whatever. Worse pitches have been made, I’m sure. I only heard about this, though, because of the “controversy” that arose over the post. The Association quickly drew attacks because their statement was apparently—wait for it—racist. The Huffington Post (because why not) put the “story” up on their front page as an example of bad race relations among cops, and our dear mayor denounced it as “breathtaking racial insensitivity that cannot be tolerated,” further demanding a formal apology from the group.

Grrrrrr.

Okay, first off, this is not racist. I don’t know the feelings of these police officers, and I don’t care. It’s what they said that matters, not how they feel, and what they said isn’t racist. I did a quick info check; Columbia is maybe 11% black, and it’s not like they’re all either lower-class or the ones committing the crimes. And there was zero insinuation from these cops that that was the case. I don’t know if anyone’s noticed, but “the hood” is hardly a single-race category, and using the phrase does not automatically imply a black neighborhood. So I’m not even going to suggest that maybe they could have “chosen better language.” You know who’s at fault? The left-wingers at HuffPo, in the city government, and elsewhere who decided they were talking about black people.

More broadly, I wish to make a point about society in general. There are many things wrong with the world today, which I’m sure I don’t need to tell you guys. But if I could name one that really irks me above most others, it’s this paranoia we have about not hurting other people’s feelings. Truth is, I don’t think the race-baiters on the Left are really responsible for this or similar so-called controversies. These things happen because there’s a larger group of people who buy into oppression theory, multiculturalism, and whatever else that wing cooks up, and overreact to everything that might conceivably be construed as racist or sexist or homophobic or otherwise intolerant. These people—mayors, school board members, public advocacy groups—are enablers, and practically every lawsuit or instance of hand-wringing you can think of happens because of them, not because of the initial agitators.

I’d like to think I’ve correctly identified the problem. Even so, that doesn’t mean I know what to do about it. I would say, though, that you can’t really wage a “campaign” against these people. Rather, I think it’s more a matter of just refusing to play their game from the outset. If you say something that you know you don’t mean anything by, but someone says you’re being insensitive against whoever, reply with “Shut up, no I’m not.” Or better yet, “Who cares?” And no, I can’t say I always practice what I preach (in this or other matters). But maybe if more people start acting this way, those enablers will think twice before making reflexive denunciations like this one against the police. I guess what I’m saying is, this country needs more people who are just callous, unfeeling jackasses.

Note: As for the requested armored vehicle, that issue was tabled at the last city council meeting, held just after all this made the news. They’ll deny that the two are connected, but surely some felt they couldn’t just grant the request after all this came out. So a few shrill cries of racism against a group not even an active part of the police department trump a request for official equipment. Nice.

Caption This...Again!

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Use some of those words to caption this:

If we have to look at him for the next four years, at least we should get a good laugh at his expense, right? And in true modern American spirit, grand prizes will be given to all who participate! However, Any prizes will be sent at a later date as we are down to only the very few small sizes of our very popular Commentarama Holiday Edition invisible t-shirts (and what we have left may or may not have been "pre-worn" by the Boiler Room Elves), but we should be getting more in soon!

More Dumb Stuff from NY and other BS...

So, last week, a large swathe of NY and NJ was hit very hard by Hurricane Sandy leaving ten of thousands permanently homeless, hundreds of thousands without electricity, and millions without gasoline and other basic necessities. The main oil refinery in Linden, New Jersey was damaged to such an extent that gasoline supplies are fast being depleted with no timetable when it will start producing gasoline again. And worst of all, included destruction is our supply of adult beverages because the main beverage distribution center was wiped out and all the adult beverages were destroyed [see photo above]. But FEMA has been here to help people apply for aid...no actual aid - no blankets, precious little food or clothing, but hey, there's a website where you can sign up...if you have electricity.

This week the same area was hit with a classic "Nor'East'er" shutting down the same areas and pounding us with 50+ mile an hour winds and 3+ feet of snow and near freezing tempuratures. This left many of the same people who had just had their electricity restored after eight day, without electricity again, freezing temperatures, and very little gasoline to power generators. But hey, the Red Cross brought cookies and hot chocolate, some even supplied blankets! FEMA shut down because of the bad weather...

As a result, Governor Christie has mandated '70's style odd/even gas rationing plan, Governor Cuomo has all disappeared except to make vague threats to the power companies, but Mayor Bloomberg has been very busy. In light of all the destruction, he sprang into action by banning charitable food donations to homeless shelters because of the unknown salt/fiber/nutritional content of the donated food...seriously.

Next week...the Zombie Apocalypse begins. Please send vodka...

Just a few announcements:

1. Thanks to StanH for the suggestion, Commentarama is compiling a list of companies, organizations, and service providers for our Commentarama-BS Boycott.
