Happy Birthday America!!

Happy Birthday America! Happy Birthday to the home of the brave and the free, to the shining city on the hill that has inspired so much good over the past Century, the one country that gave the world freedom, prosperity and peace in all but the most primitive corners of the globe. America... love it... respect it... protect it!

For this Fourth of July, a video supposedly played for airline passengers upon arrival in the United States.

If you want a beautiful tribute to this country (and from a conservative institution, no less), check out this performance of "America, the Beautiful" by choir at Hillsdale College. LINK

I still prefer the Ray Charles version but the above is pretty good.

LYRICS:
------------------------------------
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America! God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O Beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!
------------------------------------

The rockets red glare,
The bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh say doth that Star Spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the Land of the free and the home of the brave.

Kit, Grease is the word. And you are right! We are not Greece, and that is something!

Critch, Could you imagine if the US had part of Britain? How the world would be different today. Blech.

Andrew,

"Critch, Could you imagine if the US had part of Britain? How the world would be different today. Blech."

Vox has written an article titled, "3 Reasons why the American Revolution was a Mistake".

I'm sure the subjects of the British Empire all around the world were thrilled to be part of such a forward thinking empire..the silliness that somehow the British government gave a damn about slaves in the America is unbelievable. They were making money hand over fist from the Southern cotton industry and the American North's industry as well, that was fueled by very low cost dangerous labor, that was slavery in all but name. Speaking of which, none of those northern industrialists were real quick to go after slavery, most had to jump on that bandwagon after Fort Sumter.

Just skimmed the Vox and HotAir pieces. Ed Morrissey dismantles it well, though Dylan Matthews included enough caveats in his original piece that it barely hangs together in the first place.

Rather than obsess over historical events and their associated what-ifs, however, I think it's more informative to look at the overall structure of the argument---and make no mistake, it is an argument of a kind. In the typical leftist formulation, Matthews enumerates the nation's sins and then offers an unrelated solution. In this case, it's the old favorites of African slavery and Native genocide and the solution is, of course, a political system that doesn't have to answer to the plebes.
