Mercury Open Thread

I know that I said I would make it up to you for not being able to post on Tuesday, but blame Mercury. Yeah, that dastardly planet that goes all retrograde and makes life on Earth a living Hades.

So until Mercury gets its act together by the end of the weekend which by the way will end in a huge snow storm [Heck, why not?], we might as well enjoy the disruptions like getting caught at the airport for 12 hours twice in two days trying to get home and then when we finally land at our destination...we sit on the tarmac waiting for an hour to get to a gate...then just as we are about to deplane, the jetway gets stuck and we can't get off the plane for another 40 minutes. That's when I contemplated faking a heart attack just to move things along...then reconsider because spending another 12 hours at notorious Rikers Island...okay, my Mercury is really retrograding right now.

So forgive me. While I curl up in a giant ball and curse Mercury, let's open the floor to discuss anything...but Mercury. I hate Mercury.

By the way, have you read that Spanish scientists have possibly discovered two new planets beyond Neptune?

I thought the problem was usually Uranus... not Mercury? ;-) (just kidding)

Bev,

Any thoughts on the recent allegations about Al Sharpton's tax issues?

BTW, this (LINK) is why I can't stand either the Patriots or the Seahawks. Both are low class poor sports. This isn't appropriate anywhere.

Andrew Price! For quoting the most over-used bad joke in all of astronomy, you are hereby sentenced to enduring Bill's over-use of the joke!

And, yeah, those two outfits are definitely classless. Though, I was rooting for Seattle so that Coach Noll wouldn't have to share the podium of 4-time champion coach with that scumbag Belicheck. Crap...

In a sane world Brian Williams repeatedly lying about being in a helicopter that was shot down would end his career, but given that Hillary told a similar lie about sniper fire in Bosnia and didn't suffer lasting political damage, maybe it won't.

The Netanyahu speech flap is fascinating. It been clear since forever that Obama and Netanyahu don't have any use for each other, but they are getting less shy about showing it.

Any day now I expect Obama to show up in the campaign ads of whoever is running against Netanyahu.

I'm just baffled by everything going on. ISIS burns a man to death, his king responds appropriately and our president comes across like a sissy..a major reporter admits to lying and nothing happens...not a word on the news about this. Hugh Downs and Walter Cronkite actually went into battle during Operation Market-Garden in WWII on a glider...they must be spinning in their graves.

Critch said...

Hugh Downs isn't deceased, my mistake...

Andrew - Oh, har-dee-har-har...LOL!

"Any thoughts on the recent allegations about Al Sharpton's tax issues?"

Kit - thoughts like, Sharpton is guilty as hell of tax fraud and should be in prison, not visiting the White House as an honored guest? Apparently he has been opening and dissolving businesses since the early 1990's and never paid taxes on any of them.

LINK to National Review article for those of you who want to catch up. [Hint: if you use the "print" function, you can get the entire article on one page without graphics and it will be easier to read]

Re: Patriots and SeaHawks - Really, what was that brawl with 3 seconds left? Did someone diss Brady's balls again? That was just obscenely unsportsman-like.

BevfromNYC said...

Rustbelt - Who ARE those guys doing the commentary? They are hilarious!

BevfromNYC said...

Anthony - What is with the Brian Williams thing? I was reading my Twitter feed late last night and there was an explosion of tweets. Everyone was going on about Williams' non-apology for lying for 10+ years about being in the line of fire and his helicopter was forced to land. It was all a big Hillary Clinton-esque lie.

BevfromNYC said...

"Any day now I expect Obama to show up in the campaign ads of whoever is running against Netanyahu."

Anthony - I read the other day that some of Obama's campaign people have gone to Israel to help the guy running against Bibi. Obama wants him out because he makes Obama look bad. Obama has literally thrown all of our traditional allies under the bus. And have you heard that we may be giving arms to Ukraine? Yeah, Kerry is there right now negotiating. So now we are going to war against Russia. Reagan and Thatcher must be spinning in their graves and this will probably kill Gorby. What a waste.

BevfromNYC said...

Critch - What do you mean?? Obama made a strongly worded speech calling ISIS something not very nice! Btw, where is the UN in all of this?? Oh, yeah, threatening Israel and Bibi with charges of crimes against humanity.

#BrianWilliamsMisremembers is trending on twitter. And what a joy it is!

e is the thing with Brian Williams. He needs to be fired and his name said in the future reserved for Sarah Palin or Dan Quayle. The left cannot let this happen. because you know who committed the same "crime." How can anyone trust him as a news anchor after this. Problem is, her majesty, the presumptive nominee did the exact same thing. So if the left allows him to be forced out, it gives solid rationale underpinning to a campaign where one is asked "how can you trust a president who lies about being in harm's way to polish her commander-in-chief creds.?"

BevfromNYC said...

TJ - It is my understanding that Wiliams was outed by the soldiers he was with. And I think you may be right. If Williams is fired, then Hillary's lie will become much more important to her street cred.

Rustbelt, My apologies for reaching for the obvious, but it felt necessary. LOL!

First, Andrew, for the good of the universe, I had to point it out! :)

And Bev, the guys do the commentary (or 'riffing'), are Mike, Kevin, and Bill of Rifftrax. They got their start making fun of bad movies in the 90's as the writers and performers for 'Mystery Science Theater 3000.' Now, they do audio tracks for blockbuster films and VOD's for B films.

Their range includes the good... the bad... and the ugly.

And, of course, B-films like they originally did in the 90's.

I understand the stratetegic benefit of a bit of diplomacy when talking about Islamic terror, but Obama's playing down of it has gotten silly. Yes, mostly in the distant past other religions condoned horrifying things, how does that in any way excuse modern Islamic terror?

I have seen a couple articles about Republicans and rape the past few days. Right now its probably too early for any of this to matter, but hopefully by 2016 the idiots will have learned to shut the hell up so that they don't drive woman towards Hillary.

I think the first guy is broadly correct (kids are wonderful no matter the circumstances of their creation) and means well, but he could have said it a lot better (or just not said it). The second guy is just a moron who should be pointed and laughed at.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/02/05/brian-kurcaba-rape_n_6626794.html

A Republican state lawmaker said Thursday that women who become pregnant from sexual assault should not be exempt from an anti-abortion measure, because childbirth resulting from rape is "beautiful."

"Obviously rape is awful," West Virginia Del. Brian Kurcaba (R) said during a committee hearing on a new abortion restriction, according to David Gutman, a Charleston Gazette reporter. "What is beautiful is the child that could come from this."

http://townhall.com/news/politics-elections/2015/02/04/utah-lawmaker-debates-if-sex-with-unconscious-spouse-is-rape-n1952859

A Utah lawmaker has apologized for questioning whether sex with an unconscious spouse should be considered rape after a backlash from victims' advocates.

Republican state Rep. Brian Greene said in a statement Wednesday that he supports a bill to make it clear that an unconscious person can't consent to sex but was worried about unintended consequences of the measure.

Greene said Tuesday that sex with an unconscious person on a first date shouldn't be allowed, but it's different for long-term relationships.

Anthony - Just so we are clear about Obama's stand on Islamic terrorists, here is what he said at the National Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday.

He said that singling out the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, calling the militants a "death cult" and "while religion is a source for good around the world, people of all faiths have been willing to hijack religion for their own murderous ends."

That was a pretty strong statement. But if he had just stopped there, he could have saved himself. Then he went on to condemn Christians for the Crusades and somehow brought in Jim Crow laws as if good people did not to everything within their means to stop the killing or to condemn for their acts. As if we are just supposed to go - Oh, well, Christians did lots of bad stuff too, so we have to let Muslims have their time to do bad stuff without trying to stop them.

"Unless we get on our high horse and think that this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.

"So it is not unique to one group or one religion. There is a tendency in us, a simple tendency that can pervert and distort our faith."

Well, at least he didn't bring the Jews into it.

Koshcat said...

What president ding dong forgets is that none of those actions by Christians were actually done on Jesus recommendations or orders. They were done at the behest of a King or Pope.

I would love to see congress pass a law that requires ISIS to be officially designated a dangerous religious cult.

He doesn't mention the Jews because he is too afraid they will make bread from his children's blood.

And it is pronounced: ˈyu̇r-ə-nəs or yu̇-ˈrā-nəs

"He doesn't mention the Jews because he is too afraid they will make bread from his children's blood."

Koshcat- did you know that for a time Jews used white wine in all of their ceremonies just to dispel the myth that Jews did not used the blood of little Christian children?
