International Talk Like A Pirate Day!!!

It is finally here almost. The anticipation is killing me. Yes, folks, tomorrow. September 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. If you don't know what that is then you are just....well, that's just...AAAARRRRGH.

Since technically, ITLPD does not really kick off until tomorrow, now it the time to study up on the ways and means of proper pirate phrases. But first you must have a proper pirate name - Pirate Name Generator

After that you are all set. Now, I will be in and out for the next few days, but I expect you to be the very best pirates you can be. However, if real pirates strike, please feel free in interrupt the fun with news or comments...Aaaaargh, you scalliwags and scurvy dogs, hoist the jib and it's time to set sail...

The polls in Scotland close in about an hour, I believe.

Just took a look the Telegraph and Daily Mail. Both are reporting that, according to CNN, the results so far are: No 52%, Yes 58%

(slaps forehead)

[feel free to insert your CNN joke here]

Watching BBC World News.

Turnout is very high and, though only 1 county (or something) has "declared" and the Yes vote had a slight lead in that county, its looking like a No vote. A few minutes ago several panelists were already performing the the election post-mortem. Not a good sign.

They are already talking about it as if the No vote has won but results are still coming in.

To give you an idea how high turnout is: In East Dunbartonshire the turnout is 91%, Dumfries & Galloway reports 87.5%, and Orkney has 83.7%

How many elections can you remember where a state had even half that.

17 of 32 Local Councils in Scotland have released their votes. It is looking very good for the No campaign. Very unlikely Scotland will vote Yes.

Total numbers:
Yes: 521,441
No: 670,354

They are saying unless Yes wins Glasgow by HUGE numbers it will be a win for No.

Kit said...

Glasgow came in some time ago.
Yes: 194,779
No: 169,347
Percentages: 53.49-46.51

That is a win for the independence campaign but nowhere near enough to help the Yes campaign.
Total: 1,352,635
Yes: 1,137,190
Target to win: 1,822,909

Everyone is calling it for the No campaign.

Kit, The currency traders have been betting it would be a NO vote for about a week now.

Kit said...

Andrew,

Good point.

Andrew,

There are lots of calls for an English parliament. Which would be very conservative. In fact, just about every English constitutional expert on BBC World News has said an English parliament might be necessary.

We have some people with nutty attitudes about medicine here in the US, but we've clearly got nothing on Africa. God rest the souls of the health workers. Being as charitable as possible, nothing that could happen to their killers would bother me.

I wonder if American soldiers going to Africa at Obama's orders to fight the disease are going to find themselves in a Blackhawk Down type situation?

The delegation had arrived on Tuesday to do disinfection work and educate people about preventing Ebola, but residents pelted them with rocks and beat them, according to the Los Angeles Times, citing Guinean radio reports. The delegation, which is believed to have included three journalists and a local politician, fled into the bush. One journalist who escaped said she heard people looking for her while she hid, according to the BBC.

On Thursday, the bodies were found in the septic tank of a village school in the village, according to Camara.Ebola first surfaced in southeastern Guinea, where the attacks took place, in March. Since then, it has spread through the lower continent despite international efforts to combat it. More than 2,600 people have died from the disease.

Complicating efforts is the lack of education in remote areas, where some residents don't believe the virus exists. Last month, in the same area where the aid workers were killed, people rioted out of fear that workers disinfecting a market were contaminating people, according to the BBC.

On a lighter note Democratic candidate for Governor Make Michaud retweeted a video which contained a song which implied that Michaud was forcing Susan Collins to give guys oral sex.

When Republicans criticized him for it, he attacked them for nasty personal attacks. He's got chutzpah if nothing else.
