All The News That's Fit To Blog

Here’s all the news you need to know this week, all wrapped up in one tidy article. Read this and you can sleep in until Sunday! Guaaarunteeed.

Apple: Obama just vetoed the ruling of the International Trade Commission which said that Apple could not sell old iPhones because they used a technology that infringed upon a patent held by Samsung. This seems like a head scratcher. After all, patent rights are ownership rights and if Apple wants to use Samsung’s stuff, they should pay for a license, right? But there’s another angle to this that I only read about the other day. Apparently, the technology in question was something Samsung agreed could be used as an “industry standard.” That throws a different light on this. Essentially, they agreed that their invention could be viewed as public domain and that the whole industry could build around it. If you do that, then you really shouldn’t have the right to later claim ownership of it again and demand a fee for the use of that. So I agree with Obama on this.

Detroit: They say there’s a serial killer on the loose in Detroit. I have a hard time believing anyone in Detroit has the kind of dedication it takes to become a serial anything.

Big Terror: We’re told that al Qaeda has something “big” planned for the coming season. I’m not entirely sure what this means, but I think Big Lots and Shoney’s Big Boy should hire more security. In all seriousness, this kind of proves that al Qaeda wasn’t wiped out by the O, doesn’t it? When Team Obama claimed they had all but destroyed al Qaeda that struck me as a total fraud the moment they said it. You can’t kill an organization like this by killing its members, by choking off its money, or by killing its leaders. Organizations like this die from indifference, not bullets, and as long as they have things they can use to whip up retarded Arabs and Africans, they will have a steady flow of morons to carry out their plans... “Yes, Jobu, Americans took your lunch money.”

Anyway, what does this tell us? Well, it tells us that all the bombings and invasions over there have pretty much been a waste. It’s time for a strategic rethink.

Goldman Sachs: I’ve been saying for sometime that these big Wall Street banks are a menace, and that they are enriching themselves not through capitalism, but by forcing themselves into transactions as unneeded middlemen through crooked regulations. A perfect example of this has just arisen and, as of now, I commend the Justice Department for getting off their butts and thinking about doing something about it.

Here’s the set up. A few years back, our government changed the rules to let investment banks dabble in hard assets, e.g. buy actual metals rather than contracts. Goldman Sachs took advantage of this and bought a huge warehouse complex in the Detroit area in February 2010. This warehouse collects aluminum directly from makers and then ships it to purchasers when they are ready. It holds about 42% of the aluminum shipped to the US in any one year. When Goldman purchased the warehouse, it took around 3-6 weeks to turn around an order and get people their aluminum. Now it takes more than a year. Goldman claims it’s just that hard to find anyone’s order.

So people complained to the London Metal Exchange, the industry-created regulatory body that regulates warehouses. But guess who sits on the board of the LME? Goldman. Also, the LME gets funded by a kickback from warehouse rents. To “solve” this, the LME passed a rule requiring warehouses to move a certain amount of product out of the warehouses each day. But here’s the catch. They don’t say “deliver,” they just say move. So Goldman has drivers taking aluminum from one warehouse to another.

Why would Goldman do this? For one thing, they’re collecting $165 million a year in rent doing this. But that’s not the real purpose. The real purpose is to manipulate the price of aluminum by creating a shortage by keeping what is produced from reaching the market. Estimates are this scheme has increased the price of aluminum by $40 a ton. That works out to around $0.02 to $0.05 of every can of soda sold to a couple hundred dollars of every car. It is estimated that these faked delays cost consumers $3 billion a year. Companies like Coke have complained and have even taken to having their aluminum shipped directly to their plants by the makers, but they are still paying the higher aluminum prices that have resulted.

Think about that. Goldman has used a phony regulatory agency to let it inject itself into the aluminum market as an unneeded middle man, where it has injected waste into the marketplace to jack up its own profits. That has nothing to do with capitalism. It has nothing to with helping consumers or producers. This is about enriching Goldman at the expense of everyone else and using regulatory extortion to do it. Fortunately, the Justice Department is now investigating this as anti-competitive behavior. Probably not coincidentally, JP Morgan just announced they are getting out of the physical commodities business... they were about to try the same thing with copper. Goldman still owns this and other metals warehouses. Isn’t it about time someone looked at Goldman for what it is? A RICO enterprise.

Uh, No: If you have to announce something, then it's probably not true. Zooey Deschanel decided this week she needed to deny the fact that she's stupid. She said, "I am an intelligent person." Uh, huh. The girl is a rock. And White Trash Barbie Miley Cyrus (or is it Smiley Virus?) felt she had to announce that she works hard. Yep, she's "not a ratchet white girl," which the Urban Dictionary defines as "ghetto diva." Uh, huh. Nice try girls.

McDonalds: Leave McDonalds alone, Mofos! The left is waging a coordinated campaign against McDonalds right now. They want to unionize the place and raise wages. To do this, they’ve attacked McDonalds for not paying a “living wage” and they claim that doubling salaries would only increase the cost of the noble Big Mac by $0.68 cents. Interestingly, the study they are using was discredited because the guy who did it misread the numbers and compared only the labor costs of McDonalds corporate against the profits of the entire chain. So whoops, that $0.68 cents idea is total crap... much like Wendy’s new burger. Yeah, I don’t know, it looked so much better than it was. Sigh. Anyway, besides not understanding how to read a balance sheet, this tool also doesn’t seem to understand that once you start raising prices, consumers go elsewhere... silly commie.

Ultimately though, here’s the biggest point in this debate: No, McDonalds does not pay a “living wage,” i.e. a wage that will make you upper-middle class. No ever claimed they did, because you’re not supposed to make being a burger jockey a career choice. They’re called “entry level” jobs because they are intended for people who are just starting to build a work history. If you prove you can do that, then you move up quickly onto what is called “the career path.” That’s when you start making the kind of money you can live on. Retards.

I've always said they should have forgotten about invading Iraq OR Afghanistan and simply put the media team on the job that wiped out Judeo-Christian culture in America. Problem solved - with the added benefit of another 1 billion McDonald's McRib pork sandwich customers.

A RICO enterprise. Prosecution is not on the menu since they purchased the Democratic Party(NASDAQ:DONK)some time ago.

Cut aging ex Disney tween princess Milly Cyrus some slack. She doesn't have either Lindsey Lohan's glandular adornments or Annette Funacello's class.

MacDonald's - a CIA front. It's not an accident that the franchises are located over the entire globe. The louts attacking the company are actually underwritten by Putin's minions.

Andrew....Thanks for the updates!

Your understanding and explanation of the Goldman Sachs (GS) commodities scam is why I like to come to your site. I never would have read of this on my usual internets travels.

And I love it when "stars" try to explain to the public that they are really smart, not vacuous black holes with nothing to offer society except for their face, bodies or voices. Sorry idiots...as the book said "Shut Up and Sing/Act!"

What did Zooey Deschanel ever do to you? :-)

But Zooey is so cute and thin. So pert and perky! Milk, blood and ebony. With the big eyes! Even her name is supercute. No Zoe. No, it´s Zooey. Like, if Andrew would be as cool he´d be Anndruwe.

Anndruwe... ha! (Sounds South African.)

All kidding aside, yes actors will always be actors but I've listened to enough interviews and podcasts with actors (i.e. talented performers, not reality whores) and ya know what? I kinda sympathize with the argument: it's one thing to be criticized for the work, but for dressing a certain way, or for not properly representing a "cause"? Who wants to deal with that?

And re: McDonald's... as a fellow hourly wage ape, I should sympathize... but they're demanding $15/hr. The work isn't worth that much!

BevfromNYC said...

As there is a profit formula for business chains like McDonald's, I did a little research. This is what I found.

In 1970 the minimum wage was $1.60 and a burger, fries and a soda costs 97cents.

In 2013, the minumum wage is $7.25 and the same meal is $4.20. So the product-to-wage ratio has remained pretty constant at roughly 58-60% for over 40 years. So if this is a constant, raising the minimun to $15 would make that same burger, fries and soda cost approx. $18.75...hmmm.

There is this complete disconnect with the "Living Wage" people that there is no correlation between rising wages and rising prices. And the advantages of raising the minimum wage is only in the very short term. Yes, the workers will make more money, but how long until it is no longer a "living wage"? If raising the minimum works and there is no effect on prices, why do we have to keep raising the minimum?

So, how did they know there was a serial killer loose in Detroit? "Well, three of the 57 homicides from last week look kinda similar, so let's just say it's a serial killer to move things along." Okay, probably it didn't go like that, but you have to wonder.

Apple That explanation is a little off. Samsung never released any of it's patents as "industry standard." Rather, the ITC determined that one of the patents it holds is "standard essential" which places a fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) obligation on Samsung to license the patent on fair and non-exclusive terms. The same ITC found Apple to be in violation of this patent.

How Apple came to be in violation is a bit complicated. They purched the patented technology from Intel which had allowed its license with Samsung to lapse. When the products were sold, the licencing burden fell to Apple as maker of the finished product. (It's worse than that, but those are the essentials.) Apple had initially agreed to pay a licensing fee, but at a far lower price than Samsung was demanding. The ITC decision to issue a cease-and-decist to Apple was basically a non-decision--if Apple can't sell the product, no money changes hands.

All Obama did was open the can of worms back up, because now Samsung is able to appeal the decision and get the ITC to name a fair price that they can charge Apple. It also puts three other suits back on the table that the ITC basically ignored. I'm not saying that makes it a bad move on Obama's part. It's just not so cut-and-dried and the issue is far from over.

It's hard to take sides b/w Apple and Samsung. They have successfully sued each other so many times that no matter which company's device you purchase, a portion of that sale is going to the other one.

Dear Zooey, It's okay to be the dumb Deschanel sister. You're still an adorable piece of faux-quirky tail and geek fanboys will still drool over you. They really don't care if you're smart, so don't worry about it.

Dear Miley, WTF, girl!?!?!?

Dear LiLo, You weren't mentioned in this article, but that's okay. You're still the #1 hot-mess in my book.

McD's I've said it before and I'll say it again. If the proverbial excrement passes through the HVAC system, I'll go back there. They have a highly defined career path and fast food is one of the few industries where one can make it into the upper middle class and beyond without even a high school diploma.

K, LOL! :D

Democratic Party(NASDAQ:DONK... brilliant! Yeah, sadly, I don't think they'll ultimately do anything either. I think they'll make a big noise and then quietly let them continue. That one of the benefits of holding the party's pink slip.

McDonalds a CIA front... hmm, that could well be! Hmmm, the McRib!

Good point on al Qaeda. Let's let our journalists wipe them out... and social workers by "helping them." As for finding them, forget the CIA, get the student loan people to do it. Seriously, they can find anybody about in about 25 seconds.

Andrew - As much as you keep bringing up Zooey Deschanel, one would think that you might be..say...a tiny bit "obsessed"...hmmmmmm? Andrew + Zooey! Andrew and Zooey sittin' in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g!

Moving on...
My take on the whole "Al Qaeda is planning to blow us up somewhere, somewhere, sometime really soon" thing. First, we were told "a la Mission Accomplished" banner news stories and campaign rhetoric that Al Qaeda had been defeated and was on the run along with the dead bin Laden. All Hail the Great and Powerful Obama!

Then comes Benghazi and NSA snooping. So, imagine how beautifully timed this all is. A Two-fer/wag the dog kind of thing - now we have State protecting our embassies at all cost AND the NSA is crowing "See! We really DO need to seize all of your phone records, emails, and texts because if it weren't for all of that, we never would be able to find out that Al Qaeda was planning something, somewhere, sometime! And interestingly, the attacks/embassy closings are scheduled around Obama's birthday/vacation schedule and NOT around 9/11 anymore! Oh, and we droned some car in Yemen today and killed some suspected terrorists. How convenient, but may be just a little jaded...

You're welcome Patriot! I like to cover all things that I think you will all find useful and this is one those that is worth knowing. I'm glad you visit! :D

As an aside, the Goldman thing is yet another example of things that are hurting and undermining the cause of capitalism and free markets all while hiding itself in the cloak of capitalism.

On the stars, I am amazed how many stars try to do some PR work to change an image like "party girl" or "thug" or "moron." You really can't fix that by having your agent go out and say, "They really are wholesome/nice/smart" and you absolutely can't fix the problem by saying it yourself. You earn your reputations... good and bad. Zooey's people have been claiming that she's "really smart" for years now, even as evidence mounts that she's just vacant. Smiley Virus, on the other hand, has been steadily building her reputation as white trash diva for about two years now and she's done too good of a job to reverse course now.

Scott, I know lawyers who barely make $15 an hour. $15 an hour for McDonalds is ridiculous. What annoys me right now is that there is clearly a coordinated push against McDonalds. It's no coincidence that in one week, a ton of "random" articles came out about how you can't live on McDonalds wages and then lo and behold, here comes a study and a strike. This is astroturf stuff.

As for actors, I'm not judging Zoooey on her roles... as she claimed in the interview. I'm judging her on the things SHE says in interviews, the things she says on Twitter (seen a whole series of articles mocking that), and the way she behaves in public. Her lack of intelligence is obvious and has been demonstrated over and over... the girl is thick. And the only reason I care at all is because of an on-going attempt by "her people" to shoot that down.

Whenever I see an actor's people come out and start making a point that seems false in interview after interview, then I pay attention... because I don't like being lied to. And in this case, for several years now, everyone who talks about her in an interview says the words, "Oh, she's really smart." One PR flack actually said, "She one of the more brilliant people I've met." No sale.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, Great, great point!! The guy who did the discredited study looked at the cost of labor McDonalds corporate reported and then divided that into the total profits of the entire organization and came up with a 17% figure, which is a total farce.

What you've done actually makes a world of sense and I would believe your numbers are fairly accurate. And an $18 burger would be impossible to sell.

Also, you raise the very perceptive argument made in the fairy tale about the kingdom where everyone was handed a bar of gold. They all thought they were rich now. Only, within a couple days, they realized that none of them were any richer because everyone wanted more money to provide goods and services... inflation.

AndrewPrice said...

T-Rav, Sadly, so true.

In all seriousness, this one burns the bodies of the women he kills. And they've found three at this point, so they think it's the same guy.

AndrewPrice said...

tryanmax, Excellent clarification on Apple. The articles I read said Samsung had allowed this to become an industry standard. I will take your version of it though, with the caveat that between Apple and Samsung, I don't really care who wins. I just thought the industry standard issue was interesting as I hadn't seen a mention of that anywhere when talking about the issue... just "Apple used Samsung's technology without a license."

Zooey: There's nothing wrong with being stupid, just don't try to uh... you know, like send out your you, know, uh, PR people and stuff to tell us you're uh... you know, like brilliant and stuff.

Smiley Virus... yeah. Girl needs help.

McD's: I've always heard that too. McDonalds is very good at taking care of people who prove themselves to be dedicated workers. It doesn't take long to get raises and move up into lower management, get sent to burger college, and then drift upwards through management. McDonalds is the very model of how the American economy once worked in the age when everyone thought it was perfect.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, I'm not obsessed with Zooey... I'll leave that to Kit, who apparently can't post to slap me down today. Ha ha. Thank you Google! ;P

I just really don't like companies/people who use PR to try to claim they are something they clearly are not... "Pay no attention to my words and deeds, I am a ___ person/company." Drives me nuts. That's the reason I HATE Microsoft: they lie through their teeth about everything. "People have truly embraced Windows 8! We've sold more than 100 million copies. We're bigger than Jesus!" All lies.

On al Qaeda, I don't think you're jaded at all and it would not surprise me in the least if this was all just meant to deflect their prior failures... "See, see how great we really are?"

As an aside, I've always felt Obama's Mission Accomplished momentS were frauds. But how is right now any different than any other moment? They are always doing things all over the world (and they will keep doing so until militant Islam loses its appeal). They just don't do them well. Seriously, they are barely competent as terrorists go.

Zooey Deschenel is the poor man's Emma Stone.

I would say that Goldman Sachs is the tool of the Democrats, but it's more accurate to say that Washington is the tool of Goldman Sachs. As long as the Fed Reserve exists, we will never be rid of that parasite. Sure, Washington or the ITC will occasionally fine it for what sounds like a lot of money, but considering how many billions GS takes out of so many countries' economies without risk, such fine is a drop in the bucket. Plus, no one from GS will ever go to jail, even though as Andrew says, they are a RICO enterprise.

Further, Goldman enjoys a unique position in the stock market in that it can perform millions of micro trades just before the morning bell based on the scheduled trades for the morning. Nothing like skimming off the top of the market, driving up the stock price, and dumping your position microseconds before any other players are allowed to react.

I hate Goldman with a passion.

wahsatchmo said...

A quick kind of off topic comment about McDonald's:

I just watched a comedy anime about Satan being chased out of his world to Japan, who loses most of his powers, and is forced to adapt to modern life as a part-timer at "McRonald's". He plans to take over the world by going through McRonald's excellent promotion system, eventually controlling all of Japan and then the world. It was quite funny, although Japan consistently confuses Judeo/Christian doctrine and various mythologies in anime.

It's called Hataraku Maou-sama!, roughly translated as "The Devil is a Part-Timer!"

Just goes to show that the McDonald's promotion system is known world-wide.

AndrewPrice said...

wasatchmo, You and me both. Every time I turn around Goldman is raping the treasury, the market or someone else. They don't make money, they take money. Washington is indeed the tool of Goldman.

The microtrades drive me insane. How can anyone think that's a legitimate thing to allow in a supposedly fair stock market?

And you're right, what's the point in a $100 million fine when you made $1 billion on the scam?

AndrewPrice said...

wahsatchmo, That's hilarious! I'll have to find that. And yes, their promotion system is known world-wide. McDonalds really is one of the great companies to work for... I've heard that for years from people at the bottom and the top.

Which is why I should actually read the links, I guess. Yikes.

I have to say, I've never understood this obsession with Zooey. I get why you don't like Kristen Stewart because--well, no one does. And I get why you'd take shots at Miley and LiLo because--again, Yikes. But Zooey hasn't really done that much. Sure, she's a hipster, but a sometimes-adorable hipster. All I'm saying is, there's readier targets to loathe. (Though, granted, anyone who declares "I am an intelligent person" is just asking for trouble.)

Countdown to Catastrophe

Aftermath: Austria-Hungary -Part 1 of 2

-The war goes poorly for the empire in 1914, with the army taking massive losses from Russian attacks and failing to take any Serbian territory. However, cooperation with German forces eventually results in repelling most Russian attacks and the conquests of Serbia and Romania. Austria takes devastating casualties during Russia’s 1916 Brusilov Offensive (named for the Russian commander) and, for all intents and purposes, never recovers. However, do to massive losses and internal instability, Russia is gradually pushed back and withdraws before surrendering to the Central Powers in 1917. However, Austria is unable to keep up the fight against the Entente/Allies. As 1918 drags on, Czechs and Southern Slavs declare their independence. On October 31, 1918, the Hungarian government dissolves the union with Austria. The empire finally surrenders to Allied Forces in the city of Padua on November 3, 1918.
-At the Paris Peace Conference, the empire is broken up. In addition to the newly-created ethnic countries of Austria and Hungary, territory from the former empire is used to create the new countries of Poland, Czechoslovakia (a buffer state between Austria and Germany), and Yugoslavia. The territories of Bukowina and Transylvania are given to Romania. Tryol and Trieste are given to Italy.
-Emperor Charles I is forced in to exile (the 1919 Hapsburg Law expelled his family from their homeland), with his wife and children and dies on the Portuguese island of Madeira in 1922, aged 34.

-Count Leopold von Berchtold, Foreign Minister: Spends the initial months of the war trying to bring Italy in on the side of Central Powers. Under pressure from Germany, but against the wishes of the Emperor and General Conrad, he promises southern territories to Rome in exchange for an alliance. For insubordination, he is dismissed from his post in January, 1915. He later serves the ceremonial roles of Lord High Steward and Lord Chamberlain to Emperor Charles I before the end of the war, when he retires to his estate. Before his death in 1942, he laments the death of Franz Ferdinand. Believing the archduke’s plans for giving the Slavs a greater role may have saved the empire, he is heard to remark that Franz Ferdinand was a “man” whom “the monarchy needed.”

-General Franz Conrad von Hotzendorf, Army Chief of Staff: His initial offensives against both Serbia and Russia prove to be failures. The arrival of German troops helps to turn the tide, though he clashes endlessly with German Chief of Staff Erich von Fahlkenhayn. After Charles I becomes emperor, Conrad is gradually stripped of his powers. (Charles wanted to replace him, but didn’t have anyone else to fill the position.) After his final offensives against Italy prove too much for the government, he is fired on July 15, 1918. A “broken man,” he afterwards denies any guilt for starting the war until his death in 1925.

Countdown to Catastrophe

Aftermath: Austria-Hungary -Part 2 of 2

-Baron Giesl von Gieslingen, Ambassador to Serbia: Made a Foreign Ministry liaison to the Army after the start of the war, he’s accused by Conrad of passing military secrets to Berchtold. Denied a request for duty at the front, he retires in January 1915. He dies in Salzburg in 1936.

-Count Alexander Hoyos, Berchtold’s chief of staff : Remains in his post for much of the war, before serving as Ambassador to Norway from February 1917 to November 1918. He dies in 1937.

-Count Friedrich Szapary, Ambassador to Russia : Becomes a member of the Upper House (Herrenhaus) of Austria-Hungary, but plays no role in the administration of the war. In 1935, he passes away at the age of 65.

-Count Ladislaus Szogyeny, Ambassador to Germany : Retired from his post the day Germany invades Belgium- a post he had served in since 1892. He lasts only another two years before his death.

-Count Stefan Tisza, Prime Minister of Hungary : Continues to serve as prime minister until June, 1917, when he faces disagreements from both Hungarian reformers and the reformist plans of Emperor Charles I. Having already survived an assassination attempt before the conflict, he survives two more during the war- the first by a returning solder who just missed Tisza's head, and the second in October 1918 when the gunman’s revolver failed to fire. However, on October 31, 1918, a group of soldiers breaks into his home in Budapest, killing him in front of his wife. Two of the killers flee, while two others are caught and sent to prison.

Countdown to Catastrophe

Aftermath: Serbia

-The Serbian Army initially resists the first attempts by Austria-Hungary to invade it. However, combined German and Austrian forces capture most of the country in 1915, with most of the population fleeing to other Balkan states. A final push by the regrouped army eventually succeeds in breaking through and helping to defeat Austria and Bulgaria in September 1918, liberating the country. Many Austrian territories, including Bosnia, are quickly occupied and annexed by the Serbs.
-After the war, the "Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes" is proclaimed. A few years later, the country name is changed to "Yugoslavia." (“Kingdom of the Southern Slavs”) King Alexander succeeds to the throne in 1921 and sets up a royal dictatorship. He’s assassinated in 1934. The country is later invaded by Germany and, afterwards, the Soviet Union, in WWII. It remains a communist country until its breakup in the early 1990’s.

-Nedjelko Chabrinovich, co-conspirator in the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand: Convicted at trial in October 1914, he receives a 20 year sentence, since he is too young (19) for the death penalty. He dies in 1916 from tuberculosis.

-Milan Ciganovich, co-conspirator who helped supply weapons to the assassins: Sent to the United States for his own safety by the Serbian government, he spends the war in America. Afterwards, he returns and is given land by the government. He lives the life of a farmer before dying in 1926.

-Colonel Dragutin “Apis” Dimitrijevitch, Head of Serbian Intelligence, Leader of the Black Hand: Arrested during the war on false charges of trying to assassinate Serbia’s Regent Alexander I, (along with three others), he is convicted on May 23, 1917. (This is part of Prime Minister Pasic’s attempt to remove members of the Black Hand from the government.) On June 24, he is executed by firing squad. In 1953, a re-trial ordered by the Communist government of Yugoslavia and presided over by the Supreme Court of Serbia, posthumously finds Apis and his men ‘not guilty’ due to lack of evidence.

-Danilo Illitch, co-conspirator: After confessing, he is sentenced to death at the end of the trial. He is hanged on February 3, 1915.

-Nikola Pasic, Prime minister of Serbia: Known for his ability to survive the turbulent world of Serbian politics, he remains prime minister until the end of the war. Afterward, he serves three terms as Prime Minister of Yugoslavia (December 1918, 1921- 1924, and 1924- 1926). He dies at the age of 80 in December, 1926, in Belgrade.

Countdown to Catastrophe

Aftermath: Serbia -Part 2 of 2

-Gavrilo Princip, murderer of Franz Ferdinand: Found guilty at trial. (Alleged arrest photo)Although actually 20, an error on his birth certificate lists him as 19, and he is therefore sentenced to 20 years in prison. During his sentence, he shows no regret for killing the Archduke or for helping to trigger the massive war. (He does, however, regret killing Countess Sophie, a fellow Slav.) Mistreated by his Austrian guards, Princip’s tuberculosis quickly worsens. (He eventually loses an arm to the disease.) He dies on April 28, 1918, at the age of 23. On the side of his prison cell is carved, “our shadows will be walking through Vienna, strolling through the court, frightening the lords.”
Years later, his footsteps are embossed on the site of the assassination to glorify him as a Serb hero. During the anti-Serb Yugoslav Wars of the 1990's, however, the footsteps are replaced by a modest plaque.

-Major Voja Tankositch, right hand man of Colonel Apis in the Black Hand: He serves in the Serbian Army during the war, and is killed in action during the Serbian retreat in 1915.

-13 other conspirators are found guilty in the assassination trial (4 more are sentenced to die; 2 are executed by hanging); 9 others are acquitted
