Isn't it funny that we celebrate Labor Day by taking the day off? That's like celebrating Christmas by sinning. So either we're doing Labor Day wrong or we're doing Christmas wrong. Anybody up for some new Christmas traditions? :D

Actually, this vote will be interesting. I'll bet Obama is trying to shift the blame to the Republicans on this. It's a smart move.
If Congress says no and Obama respects their wishes I don't think this issue will hav much resonance with the public in 2014.
Congress won't say no. The Republicans can't let themselves be seen as "weak" and with half their fringe flank screaming that Obama is weak and won't do anything, they will vote to go forward. They will be joined by just enough "conservative" Democrats to get Obama authority to go forward.

As Dr. Asimov pointed out, the first doctorates were awarded to scholars and researchers. Medical "doctors" are just technicians with a fancy title to cut down on malpractice lawsuits. :)
K, Still don't care. A medical doctor is a meaningful title. It tells you the person has certain skills... like the title mechanic or hobo. Doctorates based on English degrees or math are just titles given to people who went to school longer than their peers. I don't respect those anymore than I respect people who want to be called Esquire or Brits who want to be called Sir.

They were nutjob conspiracy theories or racists who saw an opening when the right embraced populism without doing background checks. Now they lead groups, speak at events, do radio shows, and pretend they've been "lifelong Republicans" or "lifelong conservatives" who are fed up... when the truth is, they've always been fringe whackos who wouldn't know conservatism if it bit them in the ass.

Maybe I am too cynical, but I could liberals and conservatives uniting to vote down intervention.
In liberal and conservative districts I have a hard time imagining anyone paying a political price for voting against intervention but an easy time imagining a political price being paid for supporting intervention.
My guess is there will be considerable opposition to intervention Left and Right, which might combine for a "no" majority. If Congress does vote yes, it'll probably be due to some squishes who take the line that "Obama will intervene anyway, so we ought to legitimize it." Which totally isn't a surrender to the executive or anything.
This is apropos of nothing except that Kit posted a link to a College Humor video, which eventually led me to watch The Six Girls You Date In College. It's funny because it's true!

But the talk radio right will be screaming about sissies and demanding that we stand up and show the world our testicles. The neocons will write in the NYT how we need to maintain the NWO. I'll be honest, re Syria. My views are mixed.
I do not want US military involvement in that sh!thole of a country*. However, Obama made a statement that using chemical weapons would be a red line and, now, they have boldly done so. So I think we sort of have to respond.
But, honestly, I would've preferred he did it without congressional approval. He goofed up and now, like Pontius Pilate, he is trying to wash his hands.
However, if a No vote teaches him a lesson in humility and leadership in the realm of foreign policy, that would be wonderful.
*The CIA funneling just enough weapons and supplies to one side (or both) to keep it going a while so Al-Qaeda fighters go to fight in Syria instead of, say, Disneyland or New York City... eh, I'm cool with that.

Re: Syria my issue is how is taking out Assad by air going to secure these chemical weapons? Are we going to let the rebel forces (see also: Al Qaeda aligned) forces get hold of them? And how can the be secured without sending ground forces OR international cooperation? Do we expect Israel to do the heavy lifting?

In all seriousness, identical problem, different points on the timeline. Right now, WVA is being kept afloat by federal money and the proceeds of meth sales. They are bleeding population. Their tax base is worthless. Those with initiative leave and never come back.
The one saving grace is that Eastern West Virginia is being invaded by people from the DC area. They will take over the state within a couple decades and then the place might turn around.
Bev, My issue with Syria is that I frankly don't care. I don't see any reason for us to get involved.

The Democrats are pretty much all on board. Most of the Republicans are too, except for the ones who are evading the issue by saying "Let Congress decide" and those who want a bigger military attack than Obama is planning.
Andrew: I agree with you. I see no reason for us to be involved either. If our enemies are killing our other enemies why should we interfere. BUT since it looks like we ARE going to, what is the objective? It can't just be to drop some bombs on a few aspirin factories just so Obama doesn't look like an idiot?
IMHO, our objective should be to secure these chemical weapons (that I personally believe came from Iraq courtesy of Saddam,but that's just me...) I don't care about Assad or frankly the Syrians who have spent generations warring. Though I do take great relish watching Nancy Pelosi squirm with the photos roaming around of her with Assad during her defiant visit during the Bush years. and her claiming how wonderful Assad and his wife were...along with Vogue Magazine.
Anyway, it can't just be to take out Assad while doing nothing about the Sarin gas he used. I don't want the next time they turn up to be on No. 4, 5,or 6 train during rush hour...
Bev, Agreed. IF we go in, then it should be to wipe out these weapons either by bombing them into oblivion or physically taking them away. Then we can leave and they can resume killing each other off for all I care.

Judging by the Politico article Tea Party favorites like Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Allen West and Sarah Palin have all come out against Syria strikes. Granted, only half of those people are in office, but its those out of office who adopt the position most popular with the base,
As you've pointed out for all the ranting on talk radio about Republicans in Washington being impure since winning Congress they have given Obama the minimum needed to keep the lights on.
Anthony, Palin and Paul are the only two to really say no. Cruz is doing what he always does -- evading... "Let Congress decide this issue that I state no position on at the time except to say that I angrily disagree with everyone." But other fringers are pounding away on how cowardly Obama is and how THEY would something something "show some balls."
Right now, most are just trying to embarrass Obama because that's the only game they know. They are tying to do it by pretending they are tougher. You can't maintain that rhetoric for very long without advocating military action. And if the Democrats are smart, they'll tweak these people as weak. That will incense them and they'll be screaming how we should nuke the whole country... and Obama will have his cover.
I agree. Right now, I wouldn't be willing to take any bets on which way the Republicans will go, let alone Congress as a whole. I think the most likely scenario is that they'll splinter, but into what sized pieces? I couldn't say.
If the Republicans were smart (yeah, I know) they'd start "chickenhawking" the Dems.
Actually, some of them are doing it right, right now. They are pointing out relentlessly that Obama has botched his foreign policy and "can't even find international support for a one day bombing." Then they act non-committal to dump this on the Democrats.
That's the ideal strategy. No talk about toughness or needing to do anything, just lament that Obama has blown this so badly and that it's evidence of total failure all around. Then you express "hope" that he solves it.
Then, when the vote comes up, I would take this stand: "I'm not sure war is the right thing to do, but that's not my decision. The President has asked for this power and I give it to him and I trust he will make the decision to act OR NOT TO ACT wisely. The decision is now his."
Basically wash my hands right back in his face... just as he tried to wash his hands of the problem to the Congress.
Andrew - You're right. They need to give him the authorization, but still make it his decision. Whatever they do, the Republicans are going to be blamed anyway. But they should make it clear that whatever happens, is at the behest of President Obama. THey should have learned from what the Dems did to Bush. They voted for it before they were against it and least Bush had an actual attack on US soil to use...
I am not saying that we should be playing with peoples' lives for political gain, but it IS political. If it were not, Obama wouldn't be hemming and hawing about. He's looking for political cover.
And as for me, I want President Obama sitting in the Oval Office or before a joint session of Congress addressing the US public clearly as to why we are doing this and what our objective really is. Not specific "we are bombing on Thursday at 3pm" clearly, but explain to us as adults why we should support this. We don't need the tweets, and WH blog posts, and underlings and HuffPo articles. I want it from his mouth to my ears...

As an aside, did you see Kerry comparing Assad to Hitler and Hussein. First of all, comparing any of these loser to Hitler is pathetic. Hitler is in a league with only Stalin. Secondly, wasn't Kerry one of the guys mocking Bush when he compared Hussein to Hitler?
Now, it's possible that Kerry mean Alvin Hitler and Bill Hussein from Marketing, but I doubt it.

Questions.....
(1) Why would we want the US to side with the self-identified group that attacked us on 9/11/01?
(2) Why aren't the Republicans using BHO's own words as their ammo?
(3) Why don't the R's bring up the total cock-up of BHO's foreign policy team, and recite the litany of failures this admin has f'ed up since he was anointed?
(4) Why don't the R's state they will NOT support the Muslim Brotherhood over Christians in the Middle East?
(5) Why won't the R's vote "Present" when the time for a vote draws near?
