Thoughts

A few more thoughts...

● Georgia On My Mind: For those who haven't heard, the Republican won in Georgia today. This is actually quite funny. When the race began, it looked like the Democrat would win the primary because he ran against 12 Republicans who split the GOP vote. There was even a chance that he might win it outright. That would have been a shock, according to the Democrats, because the Republicans always win that district (Trump actually only carried it by 2 points). Anyways, the Democrats saw this as a chance to claim that this election showed that the public had turned against Trump. So they crowed about their win in Georgia and how this meant Trump needed to go! Hollywood types even invaded the district very smugly.

Then he didn't win the election outright. Suddenly, the Democrats said this race had nothing to do with Trump. They also started hating on each other over not supporting the candidate.

Then the real race began and the Democrat pulled ahead. The Democrats came back! They started dumping money into the race, but refused to say it had anything to do with Trump. But the polls kept getting better. By last week, the Democrat was ahead by 7-10%. Suddenly, the Democrats couldn't control themselves and they were back crowing that this was an indictment of Trump and he needed to be impeached! Yeeee haw!

And now the Democrat lost. Ha ha. I'm sure that by tomorrow this will have been just a local race.

At this point, the only race the Democrats can point to that shows anti-Trump sentiment (according to them) is a state legislative race in New Hampshire. Pathetic. This was after claiming a half dozen special elections would vindicate them, only to lose every single one. They are on a truly inspired losing streak!

● Set OJ Free: OJ is coming up for parole next month. Believe it or not, I think he should be set free. Here are my thoughts. I'm all but certain that OJ killed his wife. He should have been convicted and sent to prison forever. But he wasn't. California blew it and OJ got away with it. I don't like it, but I would like it less if we got rid of the rule of law just to get the people we feel the system has wrongly let escape.

When OJ was arrested in Nevada a few years later, I was shocked what they charged him with. If you or I had done what he did, we would have been charged with lesser crimes, and none of us would have served more than six months for what he did. It was clear to me that he had been sentenced for the murder of his wife, not the attempted robbery of a sports memorabilia dealer. Had OJ been stupid? Yes. Had he broken the law? Yep. But he deserved 3 years tops, not 33 years. Personally, I hope he gets out because I see this as a miscarriage of justice. I see it as the system trying to correct an error by making another.

● Yikes: Finally, a question. My daughter asked: What is the last really good movie I remember seeing? Honestly, I can't remember anything good in years. How bad are things in Hollywood that I can't even name the last decent film I saw!

Hi Kit! That's good to know. I haven't seen that one yet.

1. I am not shocked by the Georgia Republican win. Trump hasn't done too much yet and much of what he has done is by decree (in part because Obama did quite a bit by decree once he lost Congress). IIRC Democrats started going down post-Obama only after Obamacare.

The cycle is new administrations come in promising the moon and the stars but reality disappoints voters. The opposition then promises the moon and the stars, slowly taking over government.

Democrats lost Congress quickly on domestic stuff such as healthcare and gun control, the Republican lost more gradually on foreign policy and general ennui. If killing Obamacare is Trump's sole big domestic achievement I don't think there will be a quick backlash.

Its also worth noting none of these recent see saw presidents(guys who came to power enjoying dominance of Congress) have lost their second elections, so the really ambitious Democratic presidential candidates ought to A) stay out of power (talking crap from the sidelines is the best way to stay pure) and B) run in 2024.

2. OJ was dumb enough to have contact with the system after he was lucky enough to skate the first time. Let'em rot.

Speaking of guys skating on murder, I that video of the cop shooting Philandro Castile (an act which a jury acquitted him for though the department subsequently fired him) is fascinating stuff. That cop was incredibly jumpy. Permit or no, black guys ought to think real, real hard before they carry guns. Legal rights are not necessarily actual rights.

3. Saw Logan yesterday. Bleak but good stuff. All of the key actors really nailed their parts.

Now that I'm only half asleep and waiting for my shift to start here are a few observations from Georgia, but outside the 6th District... The final numbers vindicated your prediction, Andrew. Once the race was down to one Republican vs. one Democrat the previously split Republican votes easily coalesced behind Handel and their combined numbers beat Ossoff. The Democrats also saturated the market with ads to the point where people were getting annoyed by them and I think Hollywood hurt Ossoff in another way aside from their usual smug. The fact that the majority of his donations came from California and New York emphasized Republican claims that he was going to vote liberally even as he ran as a fiscal conservative. One last thing worth noting was that Ossoff caught flak for not even living in the district. Make what you will of these.

So do you think the Fem-bot SJWs will notice that the GA election was won by a...wait for it....wait for it...WOMAN?? First for this district. A female woman with a female woman name (Karen Handel) just like Hillary! SHE beat a...MAN. So, that means that perhaps Republicans will vote for WOMEN maybe kinda'. Can't wait to see how is spun.

ArgentGale said...

Oh Bev, we all know what the answer to that will be. The usual screaming about how she's a traitor to all women, internalized misogyny, and all that, though your comment reminds me of a particular annoying Ossoff radio ad... I didn't catch all of it between road noise and going over some train tracks but it sounded like it was trying to attack Handel for her previous involvement with Susan G. Komen, presumably for her resignation over the organization giving in to pressure to endorse pro-abortion groups - I don't remember what happened precisely except that Handel didn't feel comfortable after that due to her pro-life views. Not sure what he hoped to accomplish with that one.

The Dims are still saying that they should move further Left....well, then go, go now, get it over with.....

There will be an R - after the name of Congresswoman Handel, and that will stand for "Russia". Yes, it's those pesky Russians again, hacking the election after the progs (many from California) and Soros outspent the Republican/Russian coalition by something like 10:1.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, I think that Veggie Tales might help you with your dilemma. In particular, consider the Monkey song, which says:

If it doesn't have a tale, it's not a monkey,
even if it has a monkey kind of shape.
If it doesn't have a tale, it's not a monkey.
If it doesn't have a tale, it's an ape.

LINK

So translating this point to feminism:

If it's not a whiny liberal, it's not a woman,
even if it has a woman kind of shape.
If it's not a whiny liberal, it's not a woman,
If it's not a whiny liberal, it might as well be an ape.

AndrewPrice said...

LOL! So true.

What amazes me is that for generations, the Democrats were the mouthpiece of the Soviets. Yet now, it's bad to even talk to Russia? Give me a break.

AndrewPrice said...

Anthony, The acquittal bothers me. I think he should have been convicted. Same with the woman in Texas.

There are articles out today: "How do the Democrats recover from Georgia."

I'm thinking ritual suicide.

Actually, I'm wondering why they need to recover when we were told the GOP winning was inevitable. Perhaps the Democrats are engaged in doublespeak as always?

Andrew - Conversation (in my head) at work today.
Co-worker: "Why is that we [Dems] keep losing? What it is?
Me: Do you really want to know?
CW: Yes!
Me: Why are Democrats so stupid that they don't know why?
CW: Hey, who you callin' "stupid"??
Me: Oh, ya' don't like being called stupid, huh? Well, that was your first clue...

ArgentGale said...

Ha, good one, Andrew! Personally I'm just glad to be able to listen to the radio without hearing any grating political ads for a while... Two to three Ossoff ads per drive, sometimes including AARP ads talking about voting in the election to stop the Republican health care bill, was starting to cause my brain to leak out of my ears.

- Daniel

BevfromNYC said...

Daniel - the AARP ads shouldn't have surprised you. They were pushing really hard for the ACA/Obamacare which is why they lost a lot of members.

ArgentGale said...

Oh, I know they went all in for the Democrats a long time ago, Bev. Their ads were just the annoying icing on the Democrat ad blitz turd cake. I also heard about the membership drop, too. I'm just glad I missed the celebrity campaigning! All I heard of that was what was posted here as well as vaguely hearing something about Katy Perry doing a campaign concert for Ossoff. If I'd seen more of that I'm sure I'd be in a coma from stupidity exposure!

Andrew: All your points about OJ are correct, but in this case I think that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Simpson basically decapitated the mother of two of his children and a young waiter who had a crush on her. He was given an incredible gift by his jury. The fact that he is where he is now is due to his superhuman arrogance and stupidity. After the murder trial he should have stopped for every stop sign and made sure he only crossed at the crosswalks. It's his own fault he's locked up. I hope his parole request is denied.

AndrewPrice said...

GypsyTyger, I see your point and I really don't have any sympathy for him personally. He's a sh*t who deserves what he gets. And he was stupid to do the crime he got convicted for. It just bothers me that it seems that one law was used to lock him up for an unrelated crime. That kind of stuff makes me nervous because I see it as the twisting of rule of law to service private prejudice and I don't think the public will stop at bad people once they get a taste for doing it.

AndrewPrice said...

Bev, That's funny! But let me retort... "but those people are stupid!!! Look who they voted for!" (completely misses your point).

AndrewPrice said...

Daniel, These several special elections have really shown the Democrats what they need to know to fix their mess, but they are reading the lessons absolutely backwards. More of the same, but with more nastiness!

Anthony said...

The CBC has declined a second meeting with Trump. Kinda odd, but I can see the logic. Either you hold power and do what you want or your enemy holds power and you give him nothing.

Even nothing might be too much (Congressional Republicans took it on the chin from the fringe for Obamacare though not a single one voted for it) but anything is definitely too much.

Anthony said...

The press wants the names of the Cosby jurors. I disagree with the verdict, but I really, really don't want their names released.

The public would go after them, which would push future jurors towards doing what is popular rather than what they think is right.

Tennessee Jed said...

First off, I laughed my ass off reading your analysis of the Georgia special election. Summed it up beautifully. Do the t.v. Pundits on Fox do the same thing in reverse? ... sure, but I do love to laugh at liberals. Second, I actually agree about O.J. To legal wrongs don't make a right, and it is one of those rare instances where his becoming a social pariah actually is great punishment in itself. Last, I loved Hacksaw Ridge. People can talk about Mel and gore, but the acting and telling of this story were very moving to me

BevfromNYC said...

Anthony - The press has no right to know who was on the Cosby jury. It is only at the premission of the each juror and only their decision of their names are released. It is not for the court at any level to rule on that.

And it would a travesty of the jury system if the courts allow it to happen. Anyone or entity who releases the names of jurors without the express permission of each jury whose name is being used, should be prosecuted and/or sued into banktrupcy.

A Canadian sniper killed an ISIS fighter from 2.2 miles away. Hopefully that nets him a bonus or something.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/06/22/canadian-sniper-sets-world-record-with-2-1-mile-pickoff-isis-fighter.html

Shooting experts say the fatal shot at a world-record distance of 11,316 feet underscores how stunningly sophisticated military snipers are becoming. The feat, pulled off by a special forces sniper from Canada’s Joint Task Force 2, smashed the previous distance record for successful sniper shots by some 3,280 feet, a record set by a British sniper.

The last movies I'd recommend have all been kids movies. Moana and Kubo and the Two Strings are excellent takes on the "Hero's Journey." The Secret Life of Pets was a lively, road-movie-esque comedy. The only other movie I find myself recommending is Silver Linings Playbook.
