Would You Buy Insurance From This Guy?

Really? What are they thinking? Here is the latest ad that hit Twitter this week courtesy of Organizing for Action (formerly known as Obama For America) to sell insurance to all those young folks who have to buy insurance before December 23, 2013 to make it work...

I mean, would you buy insurance because this guy wants you to?

Maybe it's the adult onesie pajamas or the hot cocoa or that "all knowing" smirk, but really? Who are these people who are making these ads? Do they think young adults are idiots? Don't answer that...

This was after these very popular ads:

This one is great.

Oh, and this...

Oh, and just in case you need some pointers on how to "start the conversation", here's a helpfu list to get you started. Just a hint. Make sure when going home for the holiday you send an e-mail around and politely ask your friends and relatives to make sure that they pack their social security cards, pay stubs, and other employment information in their carry-on. That will make for a really fun holiday around the Holiday Tree with all of those holiday gifts. Frankly, I'd rather my guests pack an extra bottle of wine or holiday cookies, but that's just me.

Please make this stop...it's embarrassing.

Oh, but not half as embarrassing as this...

But then, would you buy insurance from any of these jokers either?

I'll give OFA credit, they can throw together a nifty looking website. Maybe they should have designed Healthcare.gov? Seriously, at this point, it's looking like anyone could've done better. That said, the message is getting pretty pathetic. Obama is losing his web-savvy cred by the second. He no longer sounds like that cool-smart guy in undergrad who makes politics, like, totally understandable. Now he sounds like your square parent who keeps telling you to get it together even though everything is totally fine, I just need to borrow $100 until payday, okay!? I'llpayyoubackIswear.

The kegstand insurance ad is the greatest thing ever. Its like having a car insurance ad which shows someone texting as they drive.

Utah Rep. Jim Matheson has decided he has no hope of retaining his seat due to the Obamacare follies, making the victory of Mia Love (who he defeated last time around) a near certainty. I'm sure that there are many incumbent Dems who are expecting to be forced out of office by pissed off voters in 2014.

Bev.....I think if we look at these ads from a 20 something, politico-nerd perspective they all begin to make sense.

For example, the geek in the pajamas....he looks probably exactly what the nerds at OFA look like...AND act like! Young, mama's boys, made out once with the "I think I'm a lesbian" debate team captainess. Still wear their favorite footies that Nana gave them when they were 16. Mommy still makes them hot chocolate and coos to them how wonderful and smart they are...."But honey dear, when are you going to finish medical school like your father and I want you too. We didn't pay for those expensive private schools for you to play around with sleazy politicians your whole life!" "Mooooommm...You know that we have to change the world for the better and this is how I am helping the cause!" "Okay dear, but enough about how great the Affordable Care Act is for the poor and downtrodden. What do we care about them anyway? They stink." "Mooooommmm"

And the other young people in the ads? This is how they see everyone else. The good looking girls are always getting laid by the good looking guys, so of course they'll be all for free birth control. The frat dudes, all they care about is getting drunk on cheap beer. The fat girls hang around with each other and get drunk on cheap wine dreaming and talking about the good looking dudes.

What I haven't seen yet, are the ads targeted at the minority and Hispanic community. Whoaaaa...they would have to be real careful there, as their stereotype would be way out of line. Imagine the ad....."Yo, homie.....that cut you got from the gang bang last night needs to be looked at. Is your personal physician on your O'Care plan?" --- Make sure your home bro's take care of all their gang related injuries by talking to them about my man B's Affordable Care Act---

These ads are ridiculous and will go down in history as one of the worst facepalm inducing campaigns in marketing history (Thanks Koshcat!)

Patriot, I think I'm still close enough to my 20-something self to assert that he would have found these ads incredibly condescending. They don't read as cool. They read as some stiff trying to be cool. Probably the kind of stiff who shills for OFA when everyone else is doing keg stands and getting laid.

I may do a little anecdotal research over the holidays among my younger friends and siblings.

Oh! Here's a new one: [LINK] Be sure to read the copy. Interesting approach, acknowledging the program's failures. "...now that the website is working..."

And check out this one [LINK] which I find more than a little ironic.

Awful. Just awful.

I refuse to believe those "Got Insurance" ads are real. They must be satirical parodies because nobody would produce ads that stupid and condescending.

Kit said...

I've seen news programs saying they are real but I refuse to believe it. I refuse.

No one is that incompetent.

Kit - These come OFA and Think Progress-affiliated websites. Pajama boy comes directly from the OFA website along with the talk to your friends how-to list. The "brosurance" ads are from the grammatically-challenged Colorado health exchange website Doyougotinsurance.com

BevfromNYC said...

Tryanmax - I tend to agree with you about the OFA's ability to develop a kicky website. If it were not for the constant popups that ask for my email address, I could stay there all day and chillax at the pretty colors...

I just wonder if the new Obamacare Bronze Plan with $50K deductible/out-of-pocket max covers the new Trojan lubricants ("I'm All Shook Uo , Yay-yay!"

my guess is "Miss Kitty" Sibelius approved these ads. Let's face it, she is a former insurance industry lobbyist, insurance commissioner cum governor. I think she soared past former Pa. Governor Tom Ridge into first place in the "former governor turned cabinet member who is way, way over their head" award. Honestly, Insurance Commissioner is low hanging fruit for politicians wanting to burnish their credentials for state executive office. I think that office has soared past D.A. since bashing insurance companies is even more popular than prosecuting criminals, and it is so, so easy to do since most people have about as much understanding of the industry as they do of macro-economics.

In case anyone's interested, here's some spoofs mocking the "pajama hipster" up top: LINK

Speaking solely for myself, that photo makes me want to take his hot cocoa, pour it on him, then sit back and laugh maniacally as he suffers first- and second-degree burns. Buy insurance....not so much.

Say, are those jammies flame-retardant? I say we should put them to the test, in the public interest.

The rap video straight outta 1989 ranks high (low?) on the lame-ability scale, makes the "Super Bowl Shuffle" sound like Chuck D. One of my Facebook friends is convinced Obama's white genes won out to greenlight that one.

BevfromNYC said...

EricP -Are you talking about that song that one some hair-brained Obama contest? Oh, my god!!!! It's just embarrassing!! And it was even mocke mercilessly at the Country Music Awards! This was the winner of the propaganda contest through the HHS with a $30K prize to get the youngsters on board.
Forget The Price Tag

Do you remember the early days of the Obama Admin where he tried to co-opt the National Endowment of the Arts to be his propaganda arm and he appointed actor Kal Penn to be NEA publicity liaison to all the non-profit arts groups to sell Obama? Remember...well, guess who was in charge of this contest? Kal Penn...

Kit said...

Bev,

Still refuse to believe it. :)

BevfromNYC said...

Kit - I feel your pain. It IS hard to grasp how anyone could produce such a condescending and insulting campaign. But, as Nancy Pelosi says "Embrace the suck!" Oh, no she didn't!

Kit said...

I read an article where it described Pelosi using some colorful language. Maybe its because I'm watching The Thick of It with Malcolm ----ing Tucker* but I would think "colorful language" would include a bit more than just "suck".

Bev I saw a funny picture posted on a blog somewhere. The left half was a picture of the US WW2 army guy drinking coffee from a tin cup and to the right was Pajama Boy drinking his hot cocoa. Caption said 27 year old circa 1943, 27 year old circa 2013.

Below the picture it said "Where did we go so wrong?"
