New York Update

The most amazing thing happened January 1 in NYC. The long-awaited 2nd Avenue subway line extension finally opened! You probably heard about as it is being hailed as the greatest achievement in NYC history! 88 years (or 99 years depending on who is relating the story) it has taken since the planning started.

Gov. Cuomo is just hailing himself all over the place because he finally made it happen when his father Mario, also Governor of NY, could not (nor any other Governor since 1928 (or 1918 depending)! And speaking as a long-time resident of the Upper Eastside, this is just...okay.

Okay, now let me tell what was planned 88 years ago (or 99 years depending):

This was the plan for the original T-Line:

If you look really close, the original T-line (that blue line) was supposed to go from 125 Street all the way down 2nd Avenue to Hanover Square smack dab into the heart of Wall Street.

What we actually got after 88 years (or 99 years depending) is this:

Four brand-spanking new subway stops that go from 96 Street all the way to 57th Street and then connects to the much older Q-Line. Now far be it for me to complain, but it took them 35 years to build the entire underground subway system and 88 years (or 99 years depending) to build four new stops that total about 40 blocks. But kudos to the MTA and Governor Cuomo for at least getting that much done.

Speaking of Governor Cuomo: What does it say about New York in general when our Governor and Mayor of New York City are both under investigation for political wrong-doing by the US Attorney's office? That can't be good for the state. And add in the weepy Clintons AND President-elect Donald Trump & family into the mix, and it's getting crowded with all of the swelled heads and rivers of tears that are flowing.

Both are under investigation for pay-to-play schemes in their administrations. Now, our esteemed Mayor is in the hot seat because he may or may not have been taking in donations to his now defuncted Campaign For One New York PAC while making deals with the same donors who just coincidentally had official business before the city. Yeah, comingling his campaign fundraising with official Mayoral duties is not legal apparently. But no one seemed to take this very seriously including the Mayor until he decided that we needed to see just how great he is doing and had this official video made courtesy of the taxpaying citizens of the City of New York that touts his many, many achievements since becoming Mayor. Oh, did I tell you he is running for re-election this year?

Well, you decide, is this campaigning or official city business?

I have already made up my mind.

And in closing, it appears that Hillary Clinton is floating that ol' Clinton trial balloon to see if anyone is interested in her running for Mayor of New York against Bill DeBlasio. She may (or may not) be really irked with him for not being as enthusiastic at her presidential run as he should have been seeings as how he was her campaign manager for her Senate run. LINK Frankly this isn't such a bad idea or even better, she should challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to win her old Senate seat back.

Anyway, fun time will be had by all.

Bev, I posted your article a little early because I wanted to comment on it. :)

I think it would be hilarious if Hillary ran for mayor and either lost or got indicted after winning and went to NY jail along with the rest. That would be perfect! :)

BTW, Article at the film site.

We all heard about the new T line which after reading your post was really nuthin'. It is another illustration of how New Yorkers arrogantly think the rest of the country really gives a shit about what happens to them.

Given how much Hillary loves running for office and how she's done it non-stop for the last several years, you'd think she would be better at it.

Hillary - well, ok, if you must. But what about the former disgraced US Congressman and previous mayoral candidate, Anthony Weiner? I personally think that he would do a better job than di Blasio. And Huma would be the City's First Lady - bringing her consort, Hillary, along as HER First Lady. I'd see that as a win-win for progressive thinking in NY, NY.

I have to echo Koshcat's comments. The rest of the country doesn't need to know, let alone care, whether NYC got four new subway stops. The arrogance is staggering when what NYers trumpet as a proud achievement just makes them look bad compared to their own history. The rest of us might not have subways, but we know what NYC is capable of, and it's way better than this.

Koshcat & Tryanmax - shows what you know. Did your town give the world those cutting edge "man-buns"? No, so shaddup! Though, I agree, NY'ers are waaaaay to egocentric, so they actually believe that you should care...'cause we are the center of the universe (or the 7th level of Hell and it's really just a warning to not do what we do!)

Just for the record, this is exactly how Hillary started her Senate run...doing months of "Will She/Won't She?" speculation so it looks like she is reluctantly agreeing to run. The other issue is that she will have to at least move to one of the 5 boroughs of NYC. But then she's Hillary Clinton, so she won't really need to live here. Best bet is to run for Governor or Senator (against Gillibrand) in 2018 if she really wants a gov't job to maintain her current pay-to-play lifestyle. And by 2018 maybe the sting of her losing nationally will wear off.

LL - re: the Weiner. Huma could run and probably win; Tony not so much these days. Sad really, because I think he would have made a great mayor...except for that little problem he has of exposing himself. I still wonder if it would have blown over faster if he just didn't have that last name. The headline writers could not stop with the puns!

Anthony - Yes, Hillary really does love running for office. It seems like kind of an addiction now. But she never learns from her mistakes. However, if she DOES run for Mayor or Governor all she would have to do is substitute "Mayor of NYC" or "Governor of NY State" in the "First Woman [fill in the blank] to be elected", so that would save her $$$ on printing and/or strategy consultants.

Mass shooting at Fort Lauderdale airport.

BevfromNYC said...

Kit - just read about that. No details except they have the shooter in custody.

This is really creepy. Hispanic man opened fired at baggage claim, killed 5 wounded 8. This was actually our flight two weeks ago.

Hundreds of people are streaming across the runways to get away.

AndrewPrice said...

Now it sounds like there is a second shooter at the other terminal.

Kit said...

re second shooter story: They had two reports of shots fired in the garage and Terminal 1.

Still unconfirmed.

Bev, my town gave the world the Reuben sandwich. (Arnold Jr. is a liar.) You're welcome.

AndrewPrice said...

Fox is reporting that the shooter was on a Canadian Air flight. He checked his gun. At Ft. Lauderdale, he claimed it, walked to the bathroom, loaded it and started shooting at the baggage claim.

The second shooter is apparently just confusion.

Broward County Sheriff says no other shots fired other than the ones fired by the single shooter who is now in custody.

The 2nd shooter thing appears to have been a rumor.

Kit said...

I think the second shooter thing was caused by the Ft. Lauderdale police tweeting out "Active Shooter at airport" causing some in the media to think it was referring to a possible second shooter.

This is bizarre. This is just a guess, but this almost has to be a hit. This doesn't make sense as terrorism or a crazy. This has to be someone hired to kill someone else and the other 12 are collateral damage.

Kit said...

Why do you say that, Andrew?

AndrewPrice said...

Kit,

Hispanic means not Islam. It means drugs.

Crazy people don't get on a plane to go kill people they don't know -- they don't want to sit for 3 hours before doing the killing. They walk down to somewhere local and do it at the mall or a sporting event.

This is too risky for terrorists too. He would want access to all his weapons before the attack. He wouldn't hand it over if he was just aiming to cause carnage.

Airport shootings are typically disgruntled employees. This guy can't be that either because he's not local.

The military ID sounds like a phony, which suggest access to phony documents -- again, drug dealers.

All of that tells me, he was hired by a drug lord and told to follow some guy on the plane and shoot him in the luggage area.

BevfromNYC said...

Air Canada stated that they have no record of someone by that name on any of their flights or anyone checking in or transporting firearms. I find it hard that one would be able to take any firearms across a national border anyway without it being a big deal.

Early reports are often wrong. I figure whatever the truth is will come out in a few days, though my bet is that scrum is some sort of nutjob.
